I can't imagine there are many jobs in Golden. Probably you could get a job in the winter in hotels or in the ski industry maybe. I don't really know. All I know is it's a really small place.

Yes, me.
I have a house and business premises there. We expect to be there permanently from early October (just waiting to exchange contracts on the house sale here before committing to a date).
It's time for bed for I don't have the time to do you a full reply but there is work to be had in the town outside of cleaning, waitressing, bar work etc.
The town is small and from my experience (and those I know) very friendly (but then again small towns usually are).
The last few years has seen a big increase in house prices due in part to the general increase in Canada but more because of the ski hill and wealthy Albertans buying second properties there.
Take a look at the local paper online: http://thegoldenstar.net/ This changes every week a few days later than the printed version available in town.
It has most things you will want; two supermarkets, two DIY stores, a cinema, various bars and restaurants.
The most significant thing you will miss is clothes shops. There are some places that sell clothes but you will probably want to go to Calgary which is about 2.5 hours east on the Trans Canada Highway.
The weather is colder in the winter and hotter in the summer compared to the UK (it is on the same latitude as Leatherhead).
Check out the website: http://go2rockies.com/
We have been there many times since buying the house in '04 and now have many friends both British and Canadian. I can honestly say we know our neighbours better there than we do here.
If you like outdoors stuff like hiking, climbing, rafting, fishing, skiing/snowboarding, snowmobiling, paragliding, mountainbiking etc. then you will find few places in the world better.
I read somewhere it has the best whitewater rafting in North America (not that I've tried this yet).
The big employers are: the ski hill (Kicking Horse Mountain Resort), Canadian Pacific Railways and LP (they make engineered wood products such as plywood).
Got to go now, feel free to ask more questions.
Ian.
