Default Going back to UK for a visit

We've had a death in the family, have to go home. I was wondering, do I need travel insurance? Or am I still covered by the NHS. I'm just thinking if we need to see a dr or to go to the hospital whilst in England, as an emergency? I've declared myself as a non resident in England for tax purposes.

Thanks for your input.

My understanding is that you will require travel insurance as you are no longer a resident of the uk

What a pain. I get travel insurance through work hopefully that'll cover it. I'll have to speak to someone at work. I've only been in Canada 8 months.

A bit off topic, but do you know about "bereavement fares" on AC?

Sorry about the news. Declaring yourself non-res (presumably by form R85) automatically deregisters you with the GP.

You are entitled to free emergency treatment but nothing else.

Just don't try and use online booking for those fares, that is one case where it's better to call the number provided.

Sorry to hear your sad news.

Re insurance - do you have health insurance in Canada because they normally cover overseas travel. Check your policy out. We are covered by Great West Life and I'll be using that when I go home in 2 weeks. FYI the NHS does cover emergency care.

You need to clarify that a bit. Extended health cover often has overseas coverage, provincial does not.

Yes, I mean extended cover (ie separate 'private' health cover). My Great West Life Plan stipulates I need to have Provincial cover too when travelling overseas.

You cannot get extended health without provincial cover, whether traveling overseas or not.

I've got extended health and provincial, does that mean I can go to the GP, say if I need an inhalor, and get it as a normal English priced prescription? If so what do I need to show to prove this at an English docs, Chemist?

I only ask because I came in a rush and my inhalor has nearly ran out, I'm worried if I may need to get another whilst I'm in England.

Thanks everyone x

Does that form ask for the name and address of one's doctor then and ask your authority to pass information on?

Depends on your coverage. Usually you would keep receipts and submit it to the coverage provider for reimbursement. They would only cover up to the price in Canada though. Presumably you would not get a subsidised price in the UK. You should check with your insurance provider to be sure. When taking regular meds, I always make sure I have enough for the duration of the trip.
