Default To go or not to go??????

after finally getting our pr cards we had everything booked to go in July this yeae. after we had been over to Ontario in April, to meet up with family & sort everything out we came home(after the ash cloud delayed us a couple of days) my wife had second thoughts about going.
Three flights & dog flight duly cancelled, my wife has now decided she wished we had now just gone.(damn!). But I now feel like I have lost some of the enthusiasm to go. Has anyone any words of wisdom????
We where planning on moving to the Peterborough or Lindsay area, I work in engineering & my wife has always worked i shops, but she does not drive.

Suck it up and get on with it, you'll only look back with "what if", if you don't!

Good luck whatever you choose

Hi, I don't really have any words of wisdom as each family is different and we each have different reasons for moving. I do, however, totally understand what you are going through. I go from desperation to move to total fear that we are making a huge mistake. I think if someone in our family decided they didn't want to move, we'd go back through the reasons again and come to some compromise. I expect that you have lost some enthusiasm as you thought everyone was 100% committed to going and now you've lost some of that initial drive.
I'm not sure what I'd do except talk to your wife. Discuss the reasons why she changed her mind. I'm sure she was having a wobble and regrets not going as much as you do.

If you do move over then I would suggest Peterborough would be the better choice as it has a good transit system, plenty of buses. Also has more shops and likelihood of work in that field. That said Peterborough/Kawartha's unemployment rate is 10.5%. Most jobs that are available pay little more than minimum wage.

Otherwise I would say consider what you are leaving behind and what you hope to gain by moving here.

If she doesn't drive she'll feel very isolated unless you move to Toronto or Vancouver.

Yep. Gotta learn to drive if you plan to live in the sticks.

I think it is understandable to have nerves, even blind panic, when it comes to emigrating. I think that anyone who isn't nervous, hasn't really thought the whole thing through. As you have gotten this far it would be, in my opinion, a touch foolish not to give it a go.

Someone on here has a signature that says "Regret what you've done, not what you haven't" which I think is great advice.

Good Luck with what ever you and your family decide.

Sometimes I get over this problem by giving myself no escape route.
If I know in advance that there is a chance I might bolt for it, I plan it so that it is either far too expensive or humiliatingly embarrassing to back out!
The other way is to make the move in stages - my OH has gone ahead of me to begin work, which is not only a good practical choice for us but I appreciate it is a way of making it easier for me to make the transition.
He is already there, so it is where I want to be.
He has been living and working there, which means he has encountered many of the unknowns and this makes it much less scary for when we are both there.
Some people just take more time to get used to changes than other people - maybe your wife would be happier doing this, too? It's not all great, of course, because being apart is hard as well, but it is a case of what works for you best.
Just a thought.

We came out to Peterborough, Ontario in March this year. We have settled fairly well. have two boys 7 and 5 they have settled back into school better this time than they did when they first arrived, I suppose it is because they are more familiar with the school now, and not starting part way through the year.
My OH has just started at college full time and we both work part time.
We have been asked many times why Canada? Why Peterborough? I can only keep saying we as a family needed a change and a challenge, we chose Peterborough because it seemed an area in which we felt we could settle fairly quickly.
In England we both worked full time shift work, passing each other, each feeling bad that we weren't together as a family more, Since we have been here we now feel more of a close family enjoying outdoors, swimming, camping and canoeing. So far it has worked well for us, who knows whats round the corner. We are glad and happy we took the leap.
