Hi, and welcome to BE.

Whereabouts are you heading to and do you already have a visa? If not, it's unlikely you'll be moving in the new year as most take at least a few months to sort (if you need a job offer to get a visa, think more like 6-12 months before you'll be out there).

If you're looking at trucking, this Wiki article may be useful - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Truck_Driving_in_Canada

HTH, good luck.

Ah ok. In which case, you might also want to check out the info in the Wiki about job hunting, LMO's and TWP's - figure about 3/4 months to get them sorted once you've found a job offer (that's assuming you get a positive LMO straight away and are eligible to get your TWP at the airport).

By 'partner', I assume you mean a common-law spouse? If so, she'll be able to go on your visa application and accompany you, but do bear in mind that she may not be able to work, depending on your job and the provonce you end up in.

Best of luck.

My partner is a HGV Mechanic but came over with class 1 however not sure if you are aware it does not transfer so you will have to retake your test in Canada. Atleast these were still the rules when we moved in May, If I am incorrect I am sure someone will be along to correct me.

It will depend on your job - if it is Skill Level A, O or B on the NOC Matrix (to find out, find your NOC code on the HRSDC website, then look on the matrix to see which level it is), your partner will be eligible for an open work permit (note partner in CIC terms means somebody you have married or lived with for a year or more).

If your job is Skill Level C or D (i.e. truck driver is Level C), then she wouldn't be eligible for an open work permit usually. So if she wants to work and your job isn't 'Skilled', she'd need to either get a work permit in her own right, or to hope there is a scheme in place in the province you are moving to - see here for info......http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/work/occupations.asp

As you can see from that link, some provinces would allow the spouse of a Skill Level C or D worker to get an open work permit via a pilot scheme.

What does your partner do? It may be that she has skills more in demand than yours and would have more chance at finding an employer prepared to go through the hassle/paperwork/wait of hiring a foreign worker.

Hope the above makes sense!
