Maybe things have changed since 2000. At the time, I was told that Amex UK and Amex Canada were separate businesses, so it couldn't be done.

It's true that a lot of people don't accept Amex; I believe it's to do with the high commission they charge. The good thing about Amex, from my point of view, is the speed with which you can get a new card if yours is lost/stolen. We're looking at hours, not days or weeks.

My Amex platinum (I think? Or silver? who knows) could not be transferred. They will change the address but it is still a £ sterling account. Expensive exchange rate going that way from here.

I only have Amex. I think it works everywhere.

We went to Australia on Amex points which was jolly nice. The downside though is that I pay about about $600 a year for it.
