Default genetically modified and irradiated food

Somebody told me that GM and IR food is legal and commonplace in Canada.

Given that Canada seems to pride itself on protecting your health (no smoking laws, slow speeds, etc.) can somebody please tell me that this is untrue?

I am having difficulty believing that they would allow you to eat stuff that has been proven to kill and is consequently banned in europe and asia.

Worse still, there is no law which requires these foods to be labelled... surely some misunderstanding????

<Attempts to restrain myself. Fails in attempt>

Could you perhaps provide a link to a reputable source for your contention that GM and "IR" stuff has been proven to kill?

Just curious.

Sure... here's just one:

http://www.cqs.com/50harm.htm

There are thousands. If you can wait until tomorrow, I'll trawl up all the UK government papers that have outlawed it, with good reason. I can't be arsed just now.

Well that's a very long and very frothy diatribe, but certainly contains no evidence that GM food (does it mention IR food?) has been proven to be harmful. Let alone deadly. If you want we could discuss the economic folly of relying on Monsanto (or rather trusting Monsanto), but in the meantime, paragraphs like...

Atomic Weapons vs. Gene Mutated Foods
The image of modern progress brought about solely by perfected mechanisms or technology was punctured in the 1940’s with the explosion of atomic weapons – which brought humanity to the brink of global annihilation. Einstein’s formulas created the bomb. His formulas hinged on the very same ideas of the philosopher René Descartes for their foundation. Descartes developed the underlying geometry that space may be universally or infinitely separated ("Cartesian coordinates") into distinct points. If we perfectly visualize this, we run the risk of bringing that exact image to life. Einstein’s famous formula (E = mc2), for example, allows us to explode space. Only in hindsight and seeing this result, Einstein expressed the wish of never having taken on the career of a physicist. Genetic engineering, or the splicing of genes, may be viewed as a still more perilous outcome of a Cartesian-like approach to nature. We can prevent nuclear disaster or hopefully keep nuclear weapons bottled up. But genetic engineering applies a similar philosophy and creates products intentionally released - with potential chain reactions that may not be stoppable.

....from your link, suggest that this is possibly not the reliable source I requested. Perhaps you can do better tomorrow?

Listen, don't try and detract from the original thread... does Canada allow GM and IR food or not? What is Canada's position on both? Period.

Thank you Rwin. That's all I asked. I am a little perturbed by it, but at least I know what to do now.

Well I certainly have no desire to read through yet another extremely long link to grey literature. So I'll answer your question directly.

Yes.

If that's a problem, try Australia (No, bad idea, how about staying home?) Right now I'm off to put a no doubt transgenic turkey and a bunch of IR carrots into the oven for Thanksgiving.

Oh, and if you do a bit of research, you'll find I'm not a kneejerk apologist for technology.

One more question: what do you understand by "Irradiation of food stuffs"?

Yes, I do. I'm starting preparations for dinner tomorrow, as earlier indicated.

I'm just a wee bit worried that the paragraph from your link that I reposted earlier, doesn't suggest to you that you are part of the problem, making a fuss over nothing (in terms of health outcomes; of course GM is stupid economics).

Anyway, enjoy turkey tomorrow. And I hope your tin hat holds up.

Some considerable time ago on BE, I was unwise enough to start a similar debate. Suffice to say, perishable foodstuffs here have a remarkable ability to stay <ahem> fresh for weeks. Milk, orange juice, even bacon..... sit smiling at you with a best before date a month hence. 'Tis not possible Gov, without some dodgy marketing stuff going on the GM/IR world. While I am on a rant (beer #3 lined up) why does all food here have hidden extra fat molecules that immediately attach to one's arse? I think there is a conspiracy. I think we should be told.
