Furnished Accommodation
Hi guys myself and my wife are moving to Edmonton next week from Ireland. We only have a years TWP and are eager to source a furnished 2 bed apt, flat etc. However it appears that the majority of lettings are unfurnished. Would it cost an arm and a leg to fit out a place, or can beds, sofas, tables, chairs etc be purcahase cheaply or second hand???

Re: Furnished Accommodation
There are companies that rent out furnished apartments but they are pricey, we rented one for a month in Calgary.........2 bed for $2595 per month!

There's an Ikea in Edmonton. Not that you could stay there but the prices aren't to bad for furniture.

Re: Furnished Accommodation
Forget trying to find a furnished pad, they don't exist. I move tomorrow to a new pad overlooking the lovely river valley here in Edmonton, but it will be a case of visiting IKEA to furnish the place. I'm sure it's a conspiracy. There seems to be a philosophy that furnished places are just not the done thing. I certainly hadn't planned on spending thousands of dollars in IKEA just to have a place of my own to my standard of taste. There are loads of apartments available, as long as you're careful about where you choose.

and

are two good sites. For a one bedroom you will pay upwards of $950 for a decent place and $1200+ for a two bedroom. Unfinished. Furnished places almost don't exist and the prices on those that are available are ridiculous.
Good luck

Re: Furnished Accommodation
from experience most furnished accommodation are rented out by the owners mostly cos of a number of reasons so its difficult to find many of them in the market. We rented a fully furnished house for 2900 (2500 sq f) 3 bedrooms , NW calgary. We got it thru rentfaster.ca.

Furnished accomodation here is very pricey, you'd be best just renting a place like we did that was unfurnished with appliances. We just went and picked up bits and bobs from Ikea and cheap kitchen utensils, etc from places like Canadian Superstore, Walmart, Dollar Store.
Another good place to try is the Salvation Army thrift stores, we got our sofa from there and it only cost $30 and looks like one you would pay $400 for from Ikea. To be honest at the start as long as you have something to sleep on, kitchen utensils, towels, etc and food in the fridge it ain't too bad.
Oh and if you ever fancy a drink, we're also from Ireland (Northern) and we just live outside Edmonton in Leduc.

Re: Furnished Accommodation
Hello. We had to have temporary arrangements before our stuff arrived from the UK. We bought some blow up mattresses from Canadian Tire - they were made from a company called Woods. We used them for about 2 months and they were great. Pilllows, bedding we got from Sears in a sale. If you come via Air Canada they have a large(ish) luggage allowance so you can bring sheets and covers with you. Cutlery, pots/pans and crockery we got from Walmart and bits from Zellers. All these places are reasonably priced. Compare to Woolies, Tesco Superstores and Sears is a bit like M&S/John Lewis.
