Question Foreign engineers in Toronto?

Hi all,

I am looking at going over to Toronto next year for a working holiday and was wondering if anyone has any recent employment advice related to the engineering industry? It seems I may be too optimistic with thinking that I'll be able to get myself a job as an engineer over there (judging from some of the posts I have read), especially on a working holiday visa...

I have been working for 4 years now since graduating in my home country, and it is not a requirement over here to be accredited or registered as a Chartered Engineer in order to work in that field.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

What sort of engineering?

Your main impediment will be the temporary fixed term nature of a working holiday visa I think, unless you can find some short term contract work through an agency.

Certainly plenty of foreign engineers work for my company, but they tend to be PRs here for the long haul. PEng status is not the requirement in some fields that the PEO would like you to think it is. For design signoff and the like its necessary, but in many cases supervision by a PEng is more than enough (Even if in my case that "supervision" is 150km away)

As I said, to some extent it depends what area of engineering you are in, but I wouldnt be too optimisitic on a working holiday visa , its not really what its intended for.

Thanks for your advice

I currently work as a Control Systems / Automation engineer with PLCs etc. I do intend to stay in Canada for longer than my working holiday visa allows if I got myself sorted with a job when I'm there - it just seems to be the easiest option for me to get into Canada without needing a proper work visa and a company to sponsor me.

Have you heard of many engineering companies going through the work visa sponsorship route for a foreign engineer?

Its how I got here, but that was years ago.

Its certainly not impossible, and its easier to find a job once you are here I suspect. Good Luck.
