Hi Folks,
I havent posted in such a long time. I'm landing in Vancouver on June 23rd on a one year USIT under 35's visa (same as BUNAC). Havent sorted accomodation out yet so will probably just crash in a hostel for the first week anyways. Then I think I may have a job interview the following week.
So what I'm kind of looking for is what you guys did in your first week(s)there as regards setting up bank accounts (how did you transfer your money accross), what you did for accomodation etc. I'm just basically looking for some of the "must do's" for me to do when I arrive!!
Any help would be great,
Kind regards,
Conor.

Went to the local vehicle licensing place to exchange driving licence - I think in BC you have to redo the driving test, here in Ontario it's a straight swap.
Went to the local health office to register for OHIP (Ontario scheme) - again maybe someone else on the board can advise you what the system is in BC as far as waiting time for health coverage. Here in Ontario you have to be resident in the province for 3 months prior to being covered for free healthcare so we had private insurance for 3 months with Canadasure.
My employer rented accommodation with basic furniture for us and paid for first and last month plus deposit. I'm sure if you're bunking down in a hostel for a week or two there'll be a noticeboard for rentals. As Vancouver has a high immigrant population there's likely going to be a lot of rentals and shared apartments.
Again, I'm sure others will be more informative re the specifics of BC and Vancouver, but the basics are: bank account, healthcare registration and driving licence.
Good luck!

Also, forgot to mention you need to register for your SIN number too as soon as you arrive!

Hi Trish,
Thanks very much for the info
. I think I get my SIN number when I do the orientation upon arrival. There may also be a lot of accomadation around with all the students finishing up for the summer.
Cheers,
Conor.
