Default Fire Hydrants - Parking Fines - who knew??

Ok, just a bit of friendly advice for people equally as ignorant as myself and having spoken to new immigrants in Calgary I'm not alone........if you park within 5m of a fire hydrant you get a parking fine!! :curse:

This fine seems to be a right of passage for new immigrants (at least in Calgary) but hopefully now this will save you a few bucks!!

Move to BC, where you're required to re-take tests and actually learn new rules

Ok, so it is just me then............ Plus I'm sure that's why you don't need to re-take your test in Alberta, so the cities can cash in on all the new immigrants who haven't seen enough sesame street!! :curse:

Oh, I dunno. The BC economy has done pretty well out of all the driving lessons and road tests I've had to take.

I've actually had a few since then but from what I remember it was $26 if you pay within three weeks or about $40 after that.........

Just for peoples information, if you park over 2 hours in a 2 hour zone you also get a ticket - slightly more obvious this one....and more expensive.....

And they mark your tires with chalk. So if you come back in 2 hours and move your car ahead by 1 stall, they'll still give you a ticket. Even though technically you are not in the same place :curse:

You'd think blocking a fire hydrant would be a more serious offence and therefore more expensive.

I heard a police siren from my hotel and looked out the window to see a policeman looking and pointing at my hire car which was... parked in front of a fire hydron.... the nice fellow he let me off though!!

I have witnessed first hand, a group of fireman physically lift and bounce a car out of the way of where they needed to be - and none too gently either. I've heard of the 'hose through a window' but never seen it !!

My friend parked for a minute to pick me up too close to a hydrant when we were in Montreal, well minute, 2 at most when we got to the car a ticket was on it, no-one in sight anywhere

I got a ticket shortly after, I couldn't see why, no hydrant, I was totally confused!!

Then I found out it was because I parked facing the wrong direction , you can only park on the street on the right hand side of the direction your facing.. I had spotted a parking space on the opposite side of the road and parked, just as normal in the UK
