Finding a place in Vancouver

I am moving to Vancouver on August 3rd, and currently I am discovering how hard it can be to find a place to live. I am looking to rent a one-bedroom suite, in a decent area, for no more than $1000 per month. Does anyone know of such a place, or can anyone recommend a good source for such places? My main strategy at the moment is to obsessively scan craigslist, but very few advertiser's even bother to reply to emails.
If the worst comes to the worst and I cannot find a permanent place before August 3rd - can anyone suggest a decent, cheap hotel, in which I could base myself temporarily?
Cheers.

I reckon you pay about a 30-40% premium with Bruce Ward for getting a place that's furnished and on a one-month let; compared to what you'd pay on a similar place unfurnished and on a longer-term let. To my mind that's a reasonable deal. They were perfectly happy to deal with people not in Canada and let us pay by credit card.
Of course, we'd just come from London, so pretty much anything was going to seem like a bargain to us.

Yep, I think you'd have to be insane to agree on a long-term lease without seeing the place and the area first. Although I think you can usually break leases here without too much of a big deal - I think we have to pay a $500 penalty on our place, which isn't that bad in the scheme of things.

Have a look at the homestay accomodation for short term.
You pay $225.00 placement fee and they will match you with
a family who provides accomodation for a reasonable price.

I wasn't suggesting taking anything long term. I was suggesting that accomodation agencies like Bell offer short term, fully furnished accommodation for short term rentals - sure they placement fee but you'll have nice accomodation for under $1000 and won't have to live on Cordova Street like you would if you paid that price with Bruce Ward.

Well, the winter rates for Bell are $1400 (+$200) for an old-style place in the West End. So it's probably not comparing like with like - any idea where their $950 apartments are?

Will be an older concrete building, and probably not with a sea view but everything should work and shouldn't be too "Rising Damp" style.
