Hello
I have to have an operation in a few weeks and need two months off work for recovery, does anyone know if there is there any financial help available in N.S? I don’t like asking for money but don’t think I can afford to pay the bills without some help.
Thanks

You can apply for EI although I am sure the wait time is about a month. Get some info now on this to know when to put your application in.

If EI doesn't solve it, here's the link for other assistance.

What makes me eligible?

What makes me eligible?
- You need financial support to pay for your basic needs.
- You have tried everything reasonable to find another source of income.
- You are willing to take part in an employability assessment and develop an action plan for becoming self-sufficient. You and your worker decide when you are ready to take part in an employability assessment. This assessment looks at all your skills and experience to see what kind of work you can do and what training you need at this time.
- You keep trying to find work or some other source of income unless that is not possible for you at this time. (so that overrides the previous bit)
Prescription costs may also be an issue, so see here

Thanks guys. I couldn’t work out if EI covers operations I’m guessing it should though. Is there a certain office or something that deals with it that I can call and ask questions?

start with Access Nova Scotia and go from there. Good luck.

If you qualify for EI Sickness Benefit and get a doctors letter, you can file online, or at any Service Canada office (it is federal not provincial). There is a 2 week waiting period where you don't get paid anything.

It does provided you have a doctors letter they may or may not ask for but have it ready and have worked sufficient hours to qualify.
If EI is not an option provincial assistance might be an option but if you have any savings, assests ect you may be required to exhaust those first.
Provincial assistance usually requires one to have nearly nothing left. Last resort type thing.

When my wife got her drug coverage because the cost of just one was $4000 a month
(and who could afford that!) the province paid but we had to satisfy the same rules (actually even more strict). We owned a duplex (mortgage free) in addition to the family home. As it provided an income, they ignored it as an asset and just used rental income in their calculation.

BC has certain exemptmtions as well for those on general and disability assistance. I imagine many provinces do. The exemptions for disabled are more generous vs general assistance.
