I have just got a job in Penticton in the Okanagan valley and we are off around October time...would love to hear from anyone in the area to hear what they think.
Also does anyone have any info on what we should be looking to ship over???
many thanks

Welcome and good luck with your move.
Use the search function at the top of the screen as there have been lots of past discussions about what to ship and what not to ship. I think it is a personal thing - some people like to take everything bar the kitchen sink (afraid I fell into that category as I have always been a bit of a hoarder!
) whereas some people like to think that they are starting a new life so they get rid of all their old stuff and they buy new when they get here.
It is also a matter of cost - you need to weigh up whether you can buy all new for the same price as it would be to ship all your own stuff. Again personally I thought it was cheaper to go for the container - plus although I love shopping, I didn't really want to spend the first few weeks here shopping for absolutely everything you need to run a home right down to the tin opener and potato peeler.

The Wiki article on Shipping reflects that difference of opinion. Although I thought it was a good article in many ways, its original author, Hobbess, was slightly inclined towards the "chuck it out" school of thought. I added the Discenting Opinion section to counterbalance Hobbess's advice.
Also read Solarfish's Email to a friend to get a sense of how expensive it is to stock up with stuff when you arrive.

thanks for the info...i think we may fall into the ship it category but we will have a look at the articles before we decide, especially as we cant take the electrical appliances...we will have to spend on those first.

Hi, We're also off to the Okanagan in May just been getting all the quotes in to ship our belongings. We have got a sole container, taking everything, as it would cost much more to purchase all the items again than to pay for the shipping costs.
Congratulations and Goodluck
