Default Filing Tax returns for the first time ?

I just had a call from my Father in-laws accountant (he will now be dealing with my tax)

He informed me that i have to disclose to the tax people what i earned in the UK last year (i arrived here Nov 2008)
He also said that if i didn't pay enough tax in the UK then i would have to pay it to the Canadian Gov over here
I told him i was PAYE in the UK so had my tax taken at source so i didn't have to do a tax return over there.
I told him what i had earned and also that i have not had an income since i have been here and have been living off my savings.
He also said i would have to pay $480 towards the health service for last year ? (i had private health insurance for the first 3 month so why do i have to contribute for last year when i arrived in November?)

does this guy know what hes talking about ?

Sorry to ramble
Thanks Daz

You need only declare income you received after you became a resident for tax purposes.

I don't think so

In that case you don't have to file a tax return, but it wouldn't benefit you to do so - so you can be registered on the system and to enable you to obtain access to benefits (tax credits etc.)

I'd suggest you get rid of this guy and get yourself the newcomers to Canada guide from the CRA website - then use an tax program/online to do the return yourself...

Tax returns are a drag. But they piss easy to file. once you clicked on how they work. Canada is only interesting what you make in Canada period.

This is wrong. Canada is interested on worldwide income once you are a resident for tax purposes

You see I use to export to the US as of 2 years ago. So maybe I got it wrong. The Tax office is now hunting me down for an audit. :curse:

Oh well I guess I might be wrong. Can't hurt to declared everything just in case. I guess.

This year, This is a first for me. I just got 55 bucks back. First time every. Normal I get a bill for CP.

DAZ.......what we did

Put in the tax return, put down your income from the uk, we sent copy of p45 with it as well (just proof) and although here since september hubby got rebate, me.....none as not working haha
at least you are on the system for next year..
Also starts the gst rebate off as well, but if you struggle do a google search for new immigrants for your area as not sure on ontario rules on tax etc

I have been reading up for the last few weeks and will do our own next year as H&R blocked didnt do a good job, i sorted it in the end, but once you get your head away from the uk system you will be fine

Also have you filled the form out for leaving the uk???
You should get a tax refund from them as well, give us a yell if you need the link

No worries. It is not a competition on who is right and wrong. This is why I love forums not every experiences are the same. Nor every is right or wrong 100% of the time. No harm done thanks to you we got there in they end.

I should add eBay was been a very grey area for the government for a very long time in Canada. The rules apply differently to .CA as to .Com for instants.

But the point is to convey correct information to others so it can be of use to them, not get them into trouble.
