Originally posted by flashman Actually I'm just doing my patriotic duty according to http://jurist.law.pitt.edu/forum/forumnew50.php Quote "Reichmarshall Hermann Goering of the Third Reich once said: “It is always a simple matter to drag the people along to do “the bidding of the leaders, regardless of the form of government. “All you have to do, he said, “is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country. President Bush has accused the terrorists of attacking our democratic way of life. The foundation of a democracy is the right and duty to dissent against misconduct by governmental leaders. Dissent, also unpopular in the early stages of the Vietnam War, was later voiced by a majority of Americans. We are responsible for the actions of our government. When it fails to act in a moral and lawful manner, we must speak out and educate our fellow citizens about the abuses. If we fail to dissent for fear of governmental retaliation, we will have confirmed the truth of Hermann Goering’s frightening prediction. " I guess its hard for you to understand, but maybe these people who disagree with you do so because they believe that removing a tyrant like Saddam Hussein from power is the correct thing to do. Its a cheap debating point to simply say that those people who disagree with you are simply being 'dragged along' to do 'the bidding of the leaders'. It denies to them the power of moral choice which they have and which they exercise by stating that they believe this conflict to be morally justified. BTW just as a matter of interest. I live on outskirts of Vancouver. In a piece in one of the local freebie papers, a writer argued that the best thing to happen in this war, from Canada's point of view, was that it should be dragged out, (with the consequent loss of life that entails) with neither side being able to claim outright victory, then international pressure could be brought to bear on US to step back from conflict. His resoning was something along the lines that a quick victory for US/UK forces would be harmful to long term health of world, encouraging US to strike at other countries. I'd be interested, as an Ontario resident, to find out if you believe something similar... |
Originally posted by flashman Thanks for fulfilling my prediction that this discussion would eventually get around to labelling people. Expect the rhetoric from the left to increase exponentially should that be the case." As for labelling, you are one of the worst offenders. And while we're at it, I for one am getting a little tired of this constant line of yours that anyone that doesn't agree with you is a victim of group-think. |

I don't need to mention "Groupthink" any more. Your posts are continually proving my point. For instance you have just labelled any who disagree with this war as "Leftists" |
Yes Flashman - he doesnt seem able to entertain the idea that anybody who disagrees with the war could possibly be anything but a leftist!!
