Hi everyone,
Has anyone ever attended an Expo event? We are due to go to one in May and I just wondered if anyone had found them useful (or not!)?
Their website does make it sound as though there is a lot of information to be gained from attending and at £15 a ticket, its got to be worth it.
It would just be interesting to know how useful attending these events can be.
Thanks

From other posts on this forum you will find that most people think these "shows" are a bit lame so don't expect too much and you might not be as disappointed.
Personally i wouldn't bother !

Hi Smudger75,
we went to the leeds one last may, other than getting shipping company advice, it was a waste of time
unless you was going to alberta cos everything was geared for there.
i learnt more on here!!!!!!!!!!
so petrol costs and 30 pounds in tickets was a costly event considering we were in there 35 mins and that included a coffee before we left.

so no i couldnt recommend them.

Not a lot there, that is for sure, but for us, it was a chance to "touch base" with all things Canada and for us, that was worth the £30 it cost. The seminars we found quite useful, it was good hearing about other parts of Canada that we hadn't otherwise considered.
There is also the opportunity to talk to shipping companies, money exchangers and so on but because there weren't a lot of exhibitors the queues were quite long.
That said we did have a good day out, it was nice to spend a day concentrating on Canada, especially given the length of time between the expo and our reccy, it made it all feel quite real again.
We printed off about 50 CVs but didn't give out one, there were people recruiting nurses and engineers and that was it. There was a big Alberta Stand too and the giveaways were quite good!!
Wouldn't go again though, unless we got complimentary passes, it was fine as a one off but wouldn't waste my money on a second day out, no matter how much I wanted to to feel all things Canadian!

Hi Smudger,
If you do a quick search of the forums (top right), you'll find that the Expos have been discussed many times before - usually in a negative light I have to say!

I take it you are going to the one in Leeds May 8th/9th, we are going to the same one, I hear from others that have been and they don't have good things to say apart from the Alberta contingent which suits me fine as thats where I am heading.
Anyway good luck and hope you have a good one.

Going to Alberta hopefully you will get something out of it.
I'll definitely go with an open mind and not expect anything - that way if anything good does come out of it it will be a bonus.
Hope you enjoy it too.

Forgot to ask where abouts are you from in the uk smudger75 and at what stage in the application process are you . I'm applying via the FSW cat1 route and recently received my '120 day' letter back from NS so I am now rounding up my supporting documents for the next stage .

Hi we went to one in Coventry last October(?) we werent there long but it helped us make our minds up (we were dithering before then) that we definitely wanted to make the move to Canada and it even changed our minds about where in Canada we wanted to go to. We met some great contacts who we kept in touch with and who pushed us in the right direction to finding a job. We then went on Recce to NS and OH got the job the contacts put us in touch with. We wouldnt have done it all without going to the show so it worked for us on this ocassion.
Also our daughter came away with bags full of freebies which helped her enjoy it and she has since been up for the move (little things hey).
If nothing else its a day out.
Good luck.

My mistake it probably is 9th 10th May, we probably will only go one day but hopefully will get something out of it, we were originally looking at Barrie in Ontario but plans have now changed, we're heading where the jobs are hopefully.
Good luck Smudger and Joinerboy!!

Yeah that's the one we're going to (although I thought it was the 9th/10th - I'd better check the diary!).

We're going out for a recce in May. We haven't submitted any form of application as yet. Unfortunately neither me or my husband have enough points to be able to apply for PR under FSW so we will either have to go on a TWP and apply for the NSPNP or try for the community identified stream. Before we do any of that we thought it would be worth a trip out there to make sure it is somewhere we would like to settle.
Originally we were looking to emigrate to BC but after so many positive things on here about NS we switched direction, plus (we are hoping) there is more chance of our application being successful in NS than BC.
We have made some really good contacts on here so far who have put us in touch with others in NS. When we go out in May a lot of our efforts are going to concentrate on looking at the job market and whether it is possible for my husband to find work. We are also going to look at the different areas to live, schools, housing etc.
I just hope we like it as much as everyone else seems to.
Are you going to the Expo event in Leeds also ont he 9/10 May?

I haven't started the process yet but will be going on a recce in July, hopefully will then have a job offer to add to my skilled worker application which I will be starting just before I go.
Won't have the funds required for FSW without a job offer so thats why I need the job offer plus in the current climate I don't want to be leaving a job here to be unemployed in another country.
Anyway good luck!!
