hi has anybody been to an expo show in london, is it any good.

also my wife has just been promoted at work to one position below a sister on a oncology ward, her fear that moving is that she would have to start again at the bottom of the ladder so to speak, because of all the re taking of exams to be recognised to work in canada,any experiences of this

Hi there. I'm an RN and (as far as Alberta goes and I would think anywhere else) she would be recognised for her years experience and pay would be according, however, she would be paid as a graduate nurse until passing the CRNE exam, but that money would be backdated and she would get it back once having passed the exam. As far as seniority goes, I'm not sure how that works. I'll leave that for someone more in the know to answer. I would have thought that she would be less senior because there will be other people who have been working in the unit (wherever your OH ends up) who have been there much longer (and length of time working in a specific area is I believe a factor on seniority). Again someone else will be able to advise that side of things better than me.

hi thank you for your reply, i saw somewhere recently that nurses in this country can sit the exam prior to going i cant think where i saw this it might have been on a lets emigrate news letter.

Yeah you could sit the exam before going if you want. It HAS to be sat in Canada however and there are three sittings per year - all the info you'll need is at the Canadian Nurses Association at:-

You would certainly be snapped up very quick. I have a contact, via another nurse on this board which I can PM you with if need be for Calgary. She deals specifically with recruiting International RGN's. This is assuming your not planning in going down the agency route of course.

the exp08 is in london in june and i guess its more about employment unlike the one in sandown park in march

we are thinking of going to the one in June in leeds, we are still in th researching stage of emigrating and although as a RN it should be possible we want to have a see what kind of jobs hubby could get before we go

I don't know if you mean you want to see, before you go, what kind of jobs your husband could get once he's in Canada or if you mean you want to see what kind of jobs he could secure in Canada while you're still in UK and before you've actually moved to Canada.

I don't know what kind of work your husband does. Depending on his occupation, it may or may not be feasible for him to get a job before you arrive in Canada.

I saw in another thread that you're a nurse. You belong to a skill level that entitles your husband to a spousal open work permit. Having an open work permit means that he can accept any job, from any employer, in any part of Canada.

Except for some specific occupations that are in demand, like nursing, it's much easier to find a job when you're already on the ground, with legal authorization to work in hand. Then the employer knows that you are ready to start work right away, and he/she also knows he/she doesn't have to bother with the bureaucratic process that normally is involved in hiring a foreigner.

It actually would help if your husband didn't start work right away. It would be nice if one of you had a couple of weeks in which to unpack, get settled, arrange childcare, etc. There is stuff you have to do when you first arrive -- get a social insurance number (SIN), register with the provincial health care insurance plan, arrange accommodation, buy a car, buy white goods, etc.

To get a sense of what's involved in departing from the UK and arriving in Canada, read the Wiki article called To Do Lists.

Your husband should read the Wiki articles on Job Hunting in Canada. In that main article on job hunting there are links to articles called Finding Job Opportunities and Networking. The articles demonstrate how he could start researching the Canadian job scene while he's still in the UK, and he wouldn't have to go to an exhibition on emigration to do it.
