I know it is a bit early to start worrying about this but I'm wondering how other people have been handling this.

Obviously, having just moved over there has been money in England this tax year and now money in Canada this tax year. And to make things worse both countries have different tax year ends. How have other people handled their taxes during this transition year? Have you gone to a specialist to fill out your end of year Canadian tax return? Also as I still have 2 timeshares to support on the English end until they ever sell I intend on keeping some money in the UK.

On the UK side I believe you just have to send back that form (which I haven't done yet) but as I still haven't cashed in my ISA's and PEP's yet I'm not sure what date to give them.

Seriously, get a determination of residency from Canada Revenue - this gives you the date they regard you as taxable in Canada.

I don't know about marrying a chartered accountant, but its pretty easy really, and you can do it yourself, if you fill comfortable, form can be got from here:

You'll get split year treatment. I did it all myself, but if I was doing it again I'd pay someone else to do it.

Calg....how is new life in Virginia treating you, have you settled down yet?

I am settled in just fine, built all the furniture and pretty much everything else. I have mixed feelings about where I live. On the one hand living by the beach is great, and over 80 degrees every day. On the other hand there are things I don't like, but I think those are things about American in general rather than just the place where I live.

I am waiting for what is known as an employment authorization document to arrive in the mail. My visa allows me to work, but I have to get this card sent to me in the mail before I can start. Fine, except like everything immigration related, that takes weeks to arrive. So in the mean time I am spending my time doing some courses by correspondance that I have enrolled in, buying things I don't need (although I really did need my new laser level), visiting increasingly obscure places and reading these forums. And reading. I just finished the 9/11 commission report, which I highly recommend.

Sounds like you are settling in alright then, hope your authorization doc arrives soon, so you can get back into the job market, have you got any jobs lined up yet in your field?

I know what you mean about courses, me and the mrs are just going through the local college brochure here now, looking at more courses/certifications in my field, that I can do, to beef up my resume. There are a few guys at work that have got a certification or two on me at work, considering they don't even have their bachelors, and they have just moved up to the next level in the chain, and they are now on some serious money ( $$$$$$$ ), I hope to join them soon, after this course

In my field, you just have to keep up with the current trend, if you want to remain in it.
