Default Emigration and student loans.

Hi all. We are hoping to emigrate when our eldest daughter finishes uni. As she has a student loan does this have to be repaid in full before she leaves the country or can it be repaid from Canada when she is working. Thanks.

I have been advised that I need to provide evidence of my earnings yearly when I move (not planning on paying off in full before I leave) but I have just looked on the SLC website http://www.slc.co.uk/thresholds/index.html and it appears to differ now slightly. I wont have an income to disclose straightaway as I dont have a job but I will give them a ring before I leave in March.

Others may have more experience of actually paying than I do, good luck

Thank you for your reply.
Its good to know that it doesnt have to be paid off immediatly.
Has anyone else moved away and paid their loan off from overseas?

I'm in Canada at the moment didn't have a job before I moved out so wrote to them explaining I had no income and was supporting myself through savings (included my bank statement as proof)

She'll have to fill out the form on this page

http://www.studentloanrepayment.co.u..._schema=PORTAL

I've just sent back the form again with details of my new job and they will start taking monthly payments out of my bank account next month, I still have a UK bank account for this purpose but I think you can also send them cheques too.

I do.
You just call them, they send you a form regarding you salary and they send it you back telling you how much you need to pay off each month. You have to keep a UK bank account open for them to debit from (they say you can pay by cheque, but they dont let you pay with a foreign cheque!) Its not really a problem.
