I've just found out there is an Emigrate show coming to Glasgow in the near future. However I don't know if it's worth our while going along. We've already picked Nova Scotia as our destination of choice, and went out there in September and we're going back in April/May for more recce-ing and to hand in our application.
I don't really know much about what to expect from one of these shows... are we better off saving our money for something more worthwhile? Are the shows just there to try to persuade you to want to go? If so it's definitely not required!
Or, is it a contact-making opportunity? (and if so, how does it compare to a recce; surely better contacts made out there...)

Personally, I didn't find the emigrate show that we went to (in London) any use at all, but others may have found different. That show included presentations encouraging us to locate in certain areas, which we had already chosen, like you. Beyond that, there was information from shipping and currency transfer companies, but that information is all readily available here and elsewhere online.
There were several recruiters, which could be useful, depending how soon you plan to make the move. The show we went to was dominated by trades (plumbers and electricians) and engineering firms, with the city of Calgary looking for town planners and bus drivers. Those were no use to us, but might be to others.

Save your cash we went to the Aintree show and it wasn't worth the effort. It was ok for free pens but the info available you can find on here. We also found most stands regarding Canada this time revolved round Alberta.

Try www.jobbank.gc.ca I found trade stand pretty useless at emigrate show.
You will find all the advice you need on here, use the wiki search at the top of the page lots of helpful on there.

Thanks everyone.
I guess we will give it a miss, it doesn't sound like it would be more useful than an afternoon sat at the PC searching for info online!

Hi, my husband and I went to one in London last year. We did not find the show as informative as we had hoped for. Unless you are working within the medical profession it did not offer much more information then we had already found out on the Internet. The only thing we gained was removal company details and a company for money exchange.

Went to one in London last year, and although I had low expectations to begin with it wasn't even that good. Just a money spinner for the organisers IMO.
I think they can be useful if you're in a business that has recruiters actually at the show, and who genuinely are looking for staff from the UK, but otherwise it's all information you can get for free on the web. In fact I've learned more from this forum than I ever could at the show.
