Default DVLA Transcripts - are they worth getting?

I know it is a very good idea to get proof of "No Claims" from your car insurer but I'm not so sure about the DVLA transcripts.

Has anyone obtained transcripts of their driving licence, moved to BC and found it reduces their car premiums?

We will get them if it is worth it otherwise it will be a waste of £20 per person.

Another question - does the transcript cover the whole of your driving history? My OH had several speeding convictions about 15 years ago - could the transccript do more harm than good?

I'd get them if I was you. We've used 2 insurers since we've been here and in both cases they wouldn't give a discount without them. Can't speak for the procedures in BC but I'm guessing they'd be similar to here in Ontario. Insurers refer to them as "Driver's Abstracts" btw.

As for driving history and those old speeding fines, well they don't appear once they're spent so you've no worries there.

hi Joanne

I do know when Phil insured the Car in Alberta the proof of No Claims reduced his car insurance considerably and he did shop around too - think without the proof the premium was $2000 and he managed to get it down to just above
$1000.

He didnt go for the the transcripts - didnt know that you could get something like that .

they do cover the whole of your driving history, but the convictions you refert to appear in code format, its not obvious unless they have the code or check. they only cost £5 each, just done them.

We have sent off for ours, takes 4wks and £5 each in the grand scale of things is nothing and if it helps well it's a bonus.

Hardest thing was back tracking on all the Insurance Companies we have used and getting them to send info in the correct format but we have got there at long last.

It's www.dvla.gov.uk.

With regard to car insurance we got them to give date it started, date it ended and that no claims were made on the policy. Most of them also held info on who our previous insurer was which helped with the back tracking.

So do we just have to send them name, address, etc and a cheque for five pounds?

Hi Mark,

We sent them name, address, DOB, and driver number off licence plus a cheque for the costs. Posted it to them on 11th May 07 and still waiting to hear back.

Steven
