FIRST!
Doing a search of the forum for multi+region+dvd+player seems to throw up Wallymart as being favourite for an inexpensive replacement

Most of the Philips DVD players are easy to make multi region by simply entering a free code that can be found at www.dvdregionhacks.com

we got two, don't ask. the one from best buy 'MAX' at $40 has already died, after about 6mths and very infrequent use. not even going to bother taking it back for another one for that money. the philips as mentioned we have also, thats been fine and is obviously better quality.

I'll second the recommendation if the Philips one, excellent quality sound and image, very easy to region free and plays DIVX

quite right, the only thing i never (normally) skimp on is electronics, particularly audio/video, for what this was going to be used for though seemed a quick easy solution to daughter watching the odd disney film we brought with us.

Philips are easy and cheap, but if you want a bit better quality and dont mind paying for it then check out the OPPO DVD players, you can get them in Toronto. I have the DV-983 and with a code from the internet it's fully region free and has the best picture around, it also play SACD.
The level entry 980 is very good to, or the middle ground 981 is a step up

We've got a Philips (Divx) from Walmart - was about $38 - cheap as chips and works great! Got a code off the internet, tapped it in on the remote and `cooking on gas`!!!! Plays everything.

Anyone not previously having had their multi-region DVD player hooked up to a Canadian TV should make sure their TV is capable of PAL playback. It's what UK Region 2 DVD's are encoded for, as opposed to NTSC which is the North American TV standard. I believe most newer TV's are capable of both.
