Duvets!! WTF??
Ummm - OK landed a couple of days ago and are still finding our feet. We have a furnished rental home, but we wanted to get our own bedding... easy right? Um WRONG!!!
WTF is the deal with duvets here...? We just wanted a nice heavy maybe 13.5 tog king size... But they only seam to have bed in a box sets with comforters? The comforter looks like a duvet that is patterned/precovered? and there was nothing we could see that indicated the weight! Do you just buy a comforter and wash the whole thing in the giant size washing machine? Is there no normal white duvets, then you buy a cover?? They seam to do this for pillows, but not duvets?? Help from the experts please!!! :D |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
course you can buy duvets and cover  Comforters are (in our place anywho) - are mainly used in the summer.
Look at Bed Bath and Beyond, Jysk, even SuperWalmarts sell duvets. The covers seem to be pretty expensive compared to back in blighty though. I like the comforter bed in bag sets - means I can change schemes on a whim  Also if you want a REALLY good warm duvet, find a Hutterite colony and buy a goose down one (they make them and are absolutely awesome - we have one of these :) ) |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Duvets can be found, you just need to look a little harder, Sear's had them I think
and you can get summer winter combo too |

But it get so hot in the summer:D the duvet only gets used in the fall until December and for a few weeks in the Spring! |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Ikea, Walmart, Real Candian, Jysk, BBB
Not a difficult find. |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Ikea.
|
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Don't forget that a King size here is larger than a King size in the UK - a Queen is the same size as a UK King :)
I have both 'white' duvets and comforters, use both in the winter and a comforter in the summer - the comforters get thrown into the washing machine, the duvets don't (unless they are synthetic). Walmart Duvets don't have tog ratings, I usually unzip one corner of the bag and see how thick it is. There's a 'Super' Walmart at the corner of Upper James and Fennell at Mountain Plaza. You can buy huttertute good goosedown duvets at http://www.costco.ca/CatalogSearch?s...&keyword=duvet but they are expensive. Ikea have various "warmth" ratings from 1-6. :) |

Re: Duvets!! WTF??
I don't use our duvets now. We use a couple of down alternative blankets - they are lightweight quilts. I put a fleece throw on my side lf the bed when ita's winter. We've found that heating the house at night means the duvets were too hot, plus I hate wrestling with the covers.
Costco and Bed,Bath and Beyond have some and they varen't expensive. |

Re: Duvets!! WTF??
I have an Ikea duvet and bedlinen, no comforter for me!
|
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
I know Ikea have tog ratings.
I love the comforter in a bag thing, like MMC it allows me to change the colour scheme on a whim. I always buy coordinating top sheets that go on the bed, under the comforter, change the sheets weekly as normal that way the comforter is not in the wash every other week. |

Must admit I find quilt covers so expensive here when compared to places like Argos in the UK (even if they are probably better quality here). :) |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
I'm a comforter convert! ;) Gradually replacing our duvets for comforters. Putting covers on duvets was always one of my big pet hates so now I just wash and dry the comforter and throw it back on the bed! Brilliant. No more struggling to get the cover on the duvet!!

I'm even a fan of the whole top sheet/bottom sheet thing now. When we first arrived (hotel and B&B), it was one constantly tangled mess. But I'm a tidier sleeper now. :D |

Help from the experts please!!! :D Bed in a bag from Walmart, they also sell duvets and some covers. Also try JYSK, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Winners Homesense and of course IKEA for either of the above. The bed in a bag with comforter, I am converted to using the comforters, they are just as warm (my opinion) and I don't have to fight with the duvet and cover to put the cover on!!!!!!! :D |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
I hear you, when you first go and look it seems like all there is is a sea of comforters and nothing else.
Bouclair is a store that we have here in NS, not sure if you would have it there but they have a great range of duvet covers! They feel a bit like Next Home to me |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
I think Comforters are great for kids, they are easily washed (yes the washing machines are big enough to take all sizes) I have been known to put a comforter inside a duvet cover, they fit OK....but ya best bet as others have said for duvets and covers is Ikea, they have all the togs thickness's and the duvet covers are around $10, they have come down in price over the last few years, take a trip to the US, they are lots cheaper in the US Ikea's!!
|
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
As said above, can't go wrong with Ikea....they've every choice of tog, filling and outer. Cheap enough and mine even fits in the 1950's style top loading washer.
By the way, how did the chap with the gorgeous eyes cope with the flight? (your dog, not Dave ;) although I hope he coped too of course!). Oh, and welcome to Canada....may your new life be a fab one! |

We have plenty of alternatives but the comforter I use right now, the stuff inside has become compressed and 'missing' in parts. It's mostly more like nothing but the cover and it's plenty warm enough. |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
[QUOTE=BristolUK;10595296]Helped by the fact that the house in Canada is probably warmer because it has to be.
Agree with you BristolUK :) |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
What's that sheet at the bottom of the bed of for? Not only is it not thick enough to keep your feet warm but you take off at night and have to put it back on in the morning for some reason.
|
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Another vote for IKEA duvets and covers. Although comforters are fine too IMO.

One thing to watch out for is we have found the canadian Ikea single / twin duvet and covers are a completely different size to Uk. They seem to be much larger so aren't compatible. Our kids now have the UK quilt covers (Peppa Pig etc) and the duvet all bunched up inside. |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Thanks for all the replies!! Sounds like a trip to ikea is in order!! Maybe we should try this comforter thing though... I actually like the sound of not having to put duvets into covers anymore!!
|
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Does anyone use continental quilts? That what my nan used to call them. Apparently they not as clean as using sheets.
|
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Start in Ikea with anything to do with beds, there's a thread on here where I explain at length my bed nightmare.
But to cut a long story short, no-one can actually recommend bedding to you unless they live in the same town and bought it recently, there are factories all over the place and one Simmons/Serta/etc whatever can be very different from another. The Ikea stuff is largely made in Mexico in the same plant and is largely the same as the stuff sold in Europe but in US sizes. The same is true of bed clothes, you might say, ah, I went to Bed Bath & Beyond and bought x, but they sell things from different manufacturers in the same boxes, had that happen to me with a sheet set. Exactly the same box, totally different contents, bought from two different stores a year apart. Do NOT buy anything at The Brick. Everyone will tell you to shop there, don't, all made in China crap, really unhelpful if you try and return something and I'm not talking about just one incident either. |
Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Remember if you bought your bed with you ... UK king = N American Queen roughly

Re: Duvets!! WTF??
Would one not have a sheet underneath anyway?
Ikea has been good for us, but its a bit of a trek from here. Winners is not and often has decent stuff at reasonable prices. |
