Default Dual band mobile phone

Will I be able to use a dual band mobile phone (Motorola) in Canada? Or would I need to get a tri band phone there?

From what I can gather, all of North America requires a Triband phone to work... good thing is, this should allow you to use your phone all around the world!

You might want to check your Motorola, it might turn out to be a Tri-band, as it is manufactured in the states, and majority of them are tri-band, like the star-tacs and the timesports.

If not, try and invest in a Nokia ( most are tri-bands ) samsung, ericsson, it might also help you to unlock it, so you can use it for any network when you come over, with the various carriers, Fido, Rogers et al

Dual band is 1800mhz and 900mhz.

North America operates on 1900 mhz.

So you'll either need a locally made phone or a Triband. As someone already said, your Motorola might already be Triband.

Another thing to remember is that in North America GSM isn't/wasn't the most popular cell phone technology and many carriers for digital use a slightly newer/allegedly superior format who's name i forget as i don't have a cellphone, i think its like tdna or cdma or pcs or whatever. Anyway so if you get a triband phone in the the UK that will be triband for GSM so you need to make sure that where you are moving there is a decent GSM network that has coverage in the areas you want. Most major centre like Toronto have carriers using all the major formats so you have no problem but some places don't and once you get outside of the major urban areas you lose all digital coverage and it reverts back to the older analog formats which won't work on your triband phone. So if you plan on going out of urban areas a lot and want a cell phone there it might be worth getting a multiformat one that can switch between digital and analog.
