Default Driving when back visiting the UK

Hi there,

Last summer I surrendered my UK DVLA license, exchanging it for an Ontario Drivers license.

I'm hoping to go home for a visit in spring time.

I presume I'll be allowed to drive?
As a tourist perhaps?

I'm still a UK resident.

Will I be eligible for insurance on my parents car?

Any advice / experiences appreciated!

Thanks.

You can drive in the UK on a Canadian Provincially issued license. Whether you will be insured depends on your parents insurer, they will have to ask. So will, some won't. My families insurance would not cover a non EU license and non resident even though I held a UK license.

Not sure how You can be a UK resident if you are living in Canada?

Another thing to consider is whether you'll need medical insurance. I know if I return to the UK I'm not covered by the NHS apart from in the case of emergencies. For me, aside from having a UK passport, I'm effectively visiting a foreign country.

Are you definitely "resident" still in the UK?

Hi there,

Thanks for the input.

yes, I'm still a UK resident...I'm merely on a working holiday visa which I hope to extend before April.

I should have stated this, but didn't want my post to be long winded haha.

Worst case scenario I'll just have to take a hire car?

Thanks.

David.

Doubt you'd be classed as a UK resident then.

Just to add .... I have been back to England twice - both times I have been put on my mum's insurance. I just had to send her a copy of my Alberta driving licence (front and back), she took it to her insurance broker and he added me on for two weeks. Pretty easy. Sorry I can't remember how much it cost but definitely less than £50.

Hope that helps. J

You can use an international licence for up to 12 months before you need a UK one. Based on the info above (assuming you didn't do two trips in one year), it resets if you leave.

If you're living and working in Canada, you aren't a UK resident.

As others have said, youw ill have to call your parents insurance. My husband tried to get insured on his mum's car when we were back over the holidays - he exchanged his British license for an Ontario one. They said no, they would not insure a non-EU license. He was fine to rent a car, though.

I'm actually surprised that someone else said they were able to do this. My wife tried to get added to her dad's policy when she was visiting the UK but his insurance company refused. So maybe this depends on the insurance company. She had to rent a car instead.

I know when my Brother visited our Dad back in the UK (from NZ - none of us even live on the same continent as each other!) he was able to have himself added to the car insurance for a couple of weeks for a matter of pounds. I'm not aware they experienced any difficulties. Next time I speak to the Old Man I'll ask him who he's insured with.

Thanks for all the advice.

My mistakes I am of course not a resident of the UK. but a British citizen.

However, I have not got PR in Canada so personally don't deem myself a Canadian resident either! haha.

I'll see what the insurers say come spring.

Thanks again.

I'm a named driver on my UK sister's insurance. I have a Qc license. It's very inexpensive for us (can't remember how much as been ages)

I've been added to my mums insurance a few times over the years just for a couple of weeks at a time. It was easy to do.

But the OP cannot be added to your mums insurance. It all depends on the insurer, so do, some don't. They won't know until they call the insurer and ask.
