Does anybody know what happens if you have a driving license from a province and then go to live in another one? Can you just keep it? Do you need to swap? Do you need to repass the test?

If you come to Alberta from another Canadian province, you do need to exchange your old licence for an Alberta one, but I don't know what the grace period is for doing that. While you will have a reasonable time in which to do this, I do seem to recall that you need to get around to it in due course, as other things hinge on it, according to my recollection. A licence is a piece of photo ID that is used for many other purposes. I think your car insurance also may hinge on your having a valid licence for the province in which you live.

You do not need to go through a written test concerning the rules of the road, nor do you need to undergo a practical driving test. However, the person who handles your application needs to feel satisfied that you meet the medical and vision requirements.

People with drivers' licences from the United States, Germany, Austria, Japan, Korea and Switzerland also may exchange their licences for Alberta ones without being tested.

Everything that I've mentioned is relevant to a Class 5 Operator's Licence, i.e., the kind of licence that authorises a person to operate a vehicle that accommodates up to 15 people, provided the driver is not being paid to drive. Taxi drivers, bus drivers, drivers of transportation trucks, etc., have to get other classes of licences, and different rules apply to those other classes.

I realise you may not have had Alberta in mind when you posed the question, but that is the province that I know.

I am pretty sure its 90 days before you have to swap your licence and your plates. Saskatchewan is also a province where you can swap your UK licence for a Saskatchewan one without taking the test again.

Our plan is to go to Ottawa, swap our driving license and sort ourselves a car. I have an uncle living in Ontario so I can use his address. Then we'll travel a bit. We plan to go to the Maritimes and I think that more than likely we'll end up there. In Nova Scotia I believe that you need to pass a test. So I was wandering if we havfe already our Ontarian DL if we'll have to pass a test there if we end up living there! Not that it matters that much, it's only to know what to expect!!!

UK too since end of April. Swapped mine on Wednesday

I can't find it now but ISTR that somewhere on here I've read that you have to have had an Ontario licence for a certain amount of time before you can trade it for a Nova Scotia licence. Can anyone else confirm this?
