Default Driving Licence and Car Website Question

Hello

I am moving to Toronto next week :-)

I just wanted to know that when I exchange my UK driving licence for a Ontario driving licence do they really keep my uk driving licence and send it back to the UK? If so who do they send it back to? Will I ever get it back?

Does anybody know of good websites where I can look for used cars?

Many Thanks

Sukhy.

It'll get sent back to the DVLA. Should keep a copy of it, or at least your license number, because you'll need that if you want to apply for a new license if you move back again.

www.trader.ca

try the clasifieds at www.canada.com
google for the toronto star classifieds.

There are often little newsstand boxes with copies of community papers and the autotrader too if you want a papercopy to browse when you arrive.

When I swapped my UK driving licence for an Ontario one, I went back to the UK a month or so afterwards and applied to get my UK one back, so I have both now. This was 6 months ago and nothing has been said by DVLA.

Thanks for the information.

How much did it cost to get your UK licence back? Do you remember what section you had to fill in?

Thanks

Sukhy

Post office and I can't remember how much I paid, however I do recall there was a section for "lost", "stolen" but none for given away, LOL!!! I DID NOT complete why I was needing another licence though, so there would be no recourse as I did not lie. I filled in all the sections relevant but just didn't tick why I wanted a new one.

Can you not just take a canadian driving test to get a canadian licence like you would if you were born and lived there instead of having to give up your uk licence??. That way you could have both for when you come back.

in quebec, you take a theory test... very easy i've heard and seen (examples off the web), then you take driving lessons for 8 months and then you can take a test, otherwise, no lessons and wait 12months for a test...

I will make enquires about if I can take a driving test in Toronto. I am assuming I will have to take a theory test too. I never had to take one here. LOL.

If we are looking at cost I am sure 30 pounds is peanuts compared to what they will charge to sit a test and thoery test. I am sure they would want something in the region 100 canadian dollars

I wouldn't bother with taking the test in Ontario, just swap your licences over and then if you come back to the UK you just reapply to have it back.

Perhaps my car may be of interest to someone reading this:

I'd like to add - I use TD Insurance and find them to the be the cheapest. I'm a Canadian, so my rates might be better than yours. It's a cheap vehicle to insure.

Here is a link with tons of info about buying a car in Ontario:

Why dont people who are going to Toronto from the UK, apply to the DVLA for a replacement licence before they go, they will then have 2 UK licences and the exchange one of them for your Ontario licence.

This is probably wrong in the eyes of the law, but at least you will not have the inconvenience of not having your UK licence, incase you have to return for some reason.

I will be very reluctant to part with my UK licence, I am licensed to drive all classes of vehicles including LGV / HGV Class one. ( excluding PSV )

Anyone ever done this before they go.

Eddie
