Smile Driving History

Hi

Hoping someone could advise on how to obtain driving history for car insurance in Canada? Is it my insurance company who provides this along with my no claims, or DVLA?
My wife and I landed in Halifax in January, and are now Permanent Residents. We then returned to the UK to tie up our affairs i.e. work, finances etc.Now we await the sale of our house (like many others) before returning permanently.
Any advice most welcome.

Not sure about insurance in NS, but in BC, ICBC no longer accept proof of no claims discount as this is an insurable loss. What they require is proof of having made no at fault claims, such as appropriate correspondence from an insurer sating this.

Hi Budcolin, we weren't asked for a 'history' of anything to do with driving. For our benefit only we supplied proof of no claims (I just asked the insurance companies for a letter). The maximum accepted here in NS, we were told, was 6 years. Anything above that is ignored. It helped to get the premium down which is good because car insurance premiums are HUGE here!

We re on Toronto Ontario, but for us we had letters of no claims (not no claims discount) and DVLA drivers abstract and this was enough to get us good comprehensive insurance through Johnsons at the same cost as we paid in London, UK. (for the same car, but that's another story....)

I saved the following letter from someone here on BE - not sure who, but thanks to whoever it was.

RE: Request for non-standard Proof of No Claims Letter

Policy No XXXXXX

I am writing to you today to ask if you can provide me with a non-standard Proof of No Claims Letter. I will soon be emigrating to Ontario, Canada, and in order for me to transfer my No Claims Bonus to a Canadian insurer, I require a letter which is different to a standard British proof of no claims letter.

Please note, at this stage, I do not want to cancel my insurance, I will notify you once I know when this needs doing.(Most Insurance Cos will not give this letter until policy is cancelled, so you might wait until then and omit this line)

This non-standard letter, printed on letter-headed paper, must include the following information:

• The Policy Number I held with you.
• The date my Motor Insurance Policy with you started.
• Description of insurance held - Comprehensive
• A sentence explaining that I made no claims during this time.
• Total number of years for which no claims were made. This needs to be stated as number of years of claim free driving, not as no claims discount which is not recognised..
• Also include my partner Mr xxxxx was also insured during this period as a named driver.

Yours sincerely,

xxxxxxx
