If you're thinking about draining it to remove it call someone in. If it's an underground tank (not in your basment but underground) then you could possibly have issues with the environment agency for leakage. Some companies will remove a tank from your basement FOC as long as there is 1/4 of a tank of oil in it.

The scum round here use a heated up scaffold pole and melt a hole in the tank before syphoning out what they can carry

Holy smokes Amy.............where do you plan to put the oil once it is drained from your tank? We did it once but it wasn't half a tank of oil and we pumped it into our neighbours tank...we were moving an indoor tank to outdoors.
Since then we have found that you can go to the oil company that delivers your oil and rent or borrow a pump and an oil drum to do the job.It makes the job much faster. So call your oil company that services you and see what they offer you.

Hi
1. Depending on your local bylaws, you probably will then have to have the empty tank pressure tested. If there are no leaks, or the ground is not contaminated, you probably could have it filled with sand and leave it in the ground. Removal of a tank is NOT a DIY

We currently rent a house and our oil tank here is just a smidge over half full. We don't get the money back on it until they find someone else to rent this house...which could be months....so it may be better to have the oil company drain it and stick it in our new houses' tank?
I shall give them a bell and see what they say!

Oooops I think this may be a different story, not sure the oil company will do that for you. If they took the oil out and you move and the owners don't rent it right away, it will have to have heat on with winter coming on soon....not sure about the liability of that. You may have to hang on and get your money from the future renters, although I don't know why the owner wouldn't give you the money for it as it is now there property once you move out. Seems to me when we rented the landlord gave us our damage deposit back plus some cash for the oil we left in his tank...let us know how you get on.
