Don Cherry, hockey, Canuck Culture
There's lots of noise today about a medical Doctor's opinion that Don Cherry's hockey commentaries contributes to violence in Ice Hockey and impacts all levels of the sport in Canada. Interestingly, the CBC blog on the subject raises more issues of relevance: Canadian culture, sportsmanship, personal conduct, general attitude towards life etc. Anyone have a handle on this?

you're probably right, it is no concern to 'us', sheltered as we are. I simply wondered if there was truly a strong ice hockey influence in Canadian culture since you hear primiers, politicians, corporate heads, personal coaches and parents use hockey as THE only analogy for every conceivable ideal.

What they may have in common ol' Bob Mugabe and The Don, is their audience? Mugabe has a sizeable supplicant support base that truly believe in everything he says, and interpret whatever he says as given fatherly approval. So does Don?

I think more people watch Don Cherry for the comedy factor. He has a very "in your face" personality but at the same time he is also patriotic and he does have a heart. But mass influence on society? no chance

And who told him those suits and shirt collars looked good? They must still be peeing themselves laughing.

be taken seriously.
To the cradle Canadians, the dreaded non-hyphenated, he is a mentor who tells it like it is, a real 'git er done' kind of guy. Personally, I think a lot of it is a big act and I find him hard to take seriously in any way...he basically just disagrees with anything Ron McLean says.
Be forewarned, if you are ever at a house party on a Saturday night during hockey season, stay out of the room with the big screen TV where the cradle devotees of everything Don will gravitate towards. If you don't know your stats and can nod knowingly to whatever Don is railing against, leave the room and join the rest of the party in another room of the house.
Don has been responsible for more burned retinas than anybody else in this country....

I believe I've only met him once. Obviously I've seen him on numerous bar televisions and at a distance at iced hockey games and the like. Not a fan, obviously, I don't see how an immigrant could be a fan, that'd be like an Indian in England claiming to be a fan of Nick Griffin.
