We have a dog in Ontario. He's rarely on a leash. The fine for having an unleashed dog outside a dog park in Toronto is $300 but is almost never levied. In any conservation area or tract of provinicial forest I expect to encounter other unleashed dogs, I think it's even be allowed in the latter. Beware of private land though, farmers can shoot unleashed dogs on their property and some will do it.

Attachment shows dog by the swimming pond in the forest at the top of McCowan; a good spot to meet other owners of unleashed dogs.

On this subject - do you need a permit or licence to own a dog?

We are considering buying a dog once we are completely settled and assume there must be something as you seem to need a permit to breath here!

There is a permit scheme in Toronto. If you get a dog (or a cat or, I suppose, a hamster mouse or gerbil) from the pound it'll come with a permit, if you buy it from a breeder it won't. We've never had a dog permit and we let the cat one expire a year after we got the cat. We haven't been arrested.

We live in Toronto, and there are some leash free parks but mainly the 'Law' is that they have to be leashed most of the time ppl just unleash, although last year the dog park i take Monty too got hit hard by the law inforcement officers and people were fined left right and centre. I hardly ever see a leash free dog there anymore.

In toronto you do need a license I havent got one i think its bloody stupid but if you are caught I think theres a fine. The license can be as cheap as $20 as long as they are spayed/nuetered microchipped and have all their vaccinnes.

you can find out more here:

http://www.toronto.ca/animal_services/

I dont know about out of Toronto though. oh and one last thing I know its not really done or enforced in the UK but you HAVE to pick up your dog poop here, ppl are very up on that. There is one guy in my neighbourhood who let his three big dogs crap everywhere and he was reported to animal services.

They recently fenced an area of the beach to be for dogs but we don't go into it; we let the dog run outside the fenced area like everyone else. Here he frolics with some passing dog. Note that the other dog is wearing boots.
I agree about the poop, it's not at all unusual to be asked if you have a spare plastic bag by someone who has underestimated his or her dog's production.

Yes, you will need to get tags for it. Are you technically in Belleville (<$30) or Q.West?(max of 3 at ~$20 each)

We are covered by Tyendinaga muni and are north of Blessington. I couldn't find anything on their local website about it, but then they don't have very much on there anyway.

We will probably go to the local office and ask.

We are hoping to get a goldendoodle puppy - doing the research now. DBD33 - did you buy yours locally or in the UK? If in Ontario, do you mind sharing where and what sort of price you paid - we are bring quoted prices from $500 to nearly $2k.

How times have changed...when I was a kid a golden doodle would have been called a mongrel...now the new classification for mongrels is mixed breed. However the doodle range of dogs is a marketing mans dream!

Nah, Gypsy Vanner, formerly known as cart horse, is animal marketing at its best.
