Ponoka has a population of 6,500.
Around these parts, it's well known that the town has a mental hospital. The threat of being sent to Ponoka or being locked away in Ponoka is a standing joke.
I'm not saying it's nice of people to say things like that. I'm just telling you what they say.
I've just learned from Wikipedia that the Centennial Centre (the mental hospital that I mentioned earlier) has a highly respected brain injury program.
The town has an annual Stampede.
It's slap bang in the middle of farming country.
I've driven through it.
I cannot think of anything else to tell you about it.

I have only been to Ponoka once (no, not at the mental hospital) but to a cattle auction. As Judy said, it's very rural ... if you are into farming it is probably an ok place ... but then... I was only a visitor and things may be different from a resident's point of view.

We had an ice cream at Dairy Queen in Ponoka last year, the girl asked how long we had lived in Canada we replied 2 years, she said we had picked up the language well
(We had told her we were from England). She did go red though. Bless.

From: Hampshire then Edmonton then Ponoka, then Calgary!

Hey I live in Ponoka! its a quiet rural town, has its own cinema and of course Tims! Its got 2 supermarkets IGA and SAVE ON FOODS. Its got Wendys, Macdonalds and Boston Pizza. We have the stampede every July and they have a big cattle sales area. There are bars but no real nightlife tp speak of. Highway 2 is a couple of mins away, Edmonton is an hour away, Calgary about 2.5, Red Deer about half an hour. Housing is a lot cheaper than the city, we have never queued at Ponoks hospital, the Dr we have is welsh! I like living here, I have been commuting to work in downtown Edmonton, it is doable all year around but can get tiring. No more tiring than comuter train to London from the south though!

I'd just like to remark that, given Ponoka has a population of 6500, according to Judy, a source of impeccable repute, the fact that bobhope replied to this query reveals the impressive usefulness of this forum.
