Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
Hi BE I wondered if anyone would be so kind enough as to advise me on where I can get corn meal as I would very much like to corn bread. I have been into Safeways and no sign of it, :(I am going to try Sobey's and Superstore later. But if anyone could direct me in the right direction it would make my day. Also if the recipe works out well I post it on BE:lol:
Thanks in advance Rachel |
Re: Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
My suggestion would be Bulk Barn. Pretty sure I have seen it in there - added advantage is that they carry british chocolate - had toffee crisps last week!!

Re: Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
Everywhere has it - are you missing it because it says "cornflour" on the box (not to be confused with UK cornflour=Canadian corn starch)?

Cornmeal is cornmeal and not to be confused with cornflour. It's yellow, slightly gritty and makes lovely, tasty muffins, or is used as a coating for other stuff. I used to buy it in Zehrs in the "binned" foods areas where they sell bulk baking ingredients, cereals and dried fruit etc. :)
Hope that helps! |

I bought some last week in superstore. It was in the same aisle as flour and is in a clear plastic bag with red & blue on it, made by Unico.
Hope that helps! Many thanks |

Re: Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
If you want actual cornmeal (the yellow stuff?) then you can get it pretty much anywhere - I have bought it in Safeways, Co-op, Superstore etc. Sometimes it is listed as Cornmeal, other times it might be Polenta (from memory, this is what it is called in the Co-op, there it is in the isle with the Italian foods, pasta etc). And in Superstore you can also get it in the bulk-buy section where you bag the amount you want up yourself.
If however what you want is Cornflour, it will be called cornstarch, and will be among the baking goods. And to answer your other question, yes you can buy both pinto and black beans in Superstore (sometimes pre-packaged, sometimes in the bulk-buy section too) |

Re: Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
I have tried to make cornbread without success. It always tastes bitter. I think its the baking powder but am not sure.
Any suggestions?? |
Re: Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
I use this recipe:
Cornbread 6oz cornmeal 6 oz wholemeal flour 2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 2 eggs - beaten 1/2 pint milk 3 tbsp honey 2 tbsp vegetable oil Heat oven - 400F/200C/gas 6. Mix eggs, honey, milk and vegetable oil together in a jug. In a bowl mix the cornmeal, flour, salt and baking powder together. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones and stir to mix. Pour into a greased baking tin (I use a 9" square one) and bake in the oven for 20 mins. Allow to stand in the tin for 5 mins before serving then cut into squares. I have never noticed a bitter taste, and this works out pretty well for me. |

i use cornmeal for corn bread but prefer crushed corn for a polenta italian style (served as side dish) or à la grandmaman (a full dish) - which is similar to porridge in making and consistency. happy cooking / baking to you all! |

Any suggestions?? In a skillet (preferably black iron) put 3 Tblsp shortening (the Not all vegatable type makes better bread) place in a 400 degree oven while assembling the rest of the ingredients. The shortening should be smoking when it is removed from the oven and poured into the mixture............ 3 cups Cornmeal 1/'2 cup plain flour 1 Tblsp sugar 1 tsp salt 1/4 tsp Baking Soda 1 Egg..beaten 3 Cups Buttermilk combine the dry ingredients. Stir to distrubute them evenly. Add egg to the buttermilk, stir and then add to the dry mixture. Stir only until the ingredients are no longer dry (don't over mix..should have the consistency of thin Oatmeal..depending on the thickness of the Buttermilk, add a little more if too thick, or a little less if it seems to be too thin.) Take the smoking shortening from the oven and pour into the mixture. Stir to incorporate. Place in a 400 degree oven until Golden Brown.... If you can find Stone Ground Cornmeal, that's best.......enjoy...Grandpa John |

John from Georgia.........Here in N. Georgia, we LIVE on cornbread. Yes, it is the baking powder that causes the cornmeal to taste bitter. Here in the N. Georgia mountains, we ALWAYS use white cornmeal. To make authentic cornbread.......

Baking soda isn't the same as baking powder?? And cornmeal isn't the same as cornflour or is it? (Cornstarch is called cornflour in the UK) Anyway thanks for the recipe and the tip about the smoking shortening. |
Re: Does anybody know what shops stock corn meal
Rube's Flour, under the St. Lawrence market, keeps all manner of corn meal.

Is there anything that you can't buy at the St Lawrence market??
I have, btw, been going to the market since Rube was an old Jewish guy, not some Asian who changed his name to match that of the stand he'd acquired! |
