Hi all.
For info - I have looked on the Wiki, I have looked on the SD79 and I have even emailed a Head of a local school.
Here is my question - especially to those with children aged 8 -10 and have recently moved to Vancouver Island.
We are currently trying to sell our house (:curse
(or we'll rent - we are trying to avoid this but it is seeming inevitable!
) - anyway!! once we have done this we will be heading out to BC via PNP.
We have sent our PR application and have also sent an application for a work permit for my other half who has a job awaiting him.
PLEASE could someone tell me whether they have had to pay for their childrens education in the Cowichan area? We would need to enroll two children and I am getting conflicting information - some info says i'll have to pay others state I will not.
So if there are any parents out there with kids in SD79 schools - did you have to plead to get your children in - was it a simple task - did you have to pay $1100 each child each month until you got your PR status? If not what type of permit did you have?
ANY help from those who have kids out there - is very much appreciated.
Im getting confused? and $2200 per month will mean me and the kids will need to stay home until we get our PR because it will not be doable.
Thanks everyone!
Natalie
(ps - the head said if we had a Work Permit we wouldnt have to pay if we had a Temporary Work Permit - we would and I believe this is what you are given when going via PNP!).

oh and no pleading needed to get them in. We turned up unannounced and asked about places and they said daughter could stay that day if she liked or start the following day.

hy there!
took me a while to realise that you're talking about the cowichan valley - i guess not everybody knows all the school districts by heart
(i know that the comox valley is sd71 and that's about it)
if i'm not very much mistaken maddhobs and maple leaf live in the area, have kids and probably can tell you more.
edit: didn't think of you, jempee, sorry.
possibly because i give the shawnigan lake area its own status...
a work permit and a temporary work permit are normally terms for one and the same thing. that's what you're going to be if you arrive before pr under pnp is granted *. just for the sake of getting a stronger case by proving that you intend to live here permanently and that the wp is just the first step to come over asap: take your correspondence from and to pnp and cic with you when you enroll your kids.
afaik (no own kids though) children of work permit holders are in general school fee exempt. there are still costs for books, materials and trips though.
good luck from up-island!
* i didn't check all your posts and don't know your exact circumstances. just in case you haven't applied for the wp yet: make sure you get the confirmation lettre from bcpnp which supports getting a wp without a lmo. a call / e-mail to your case officer should do the trick.

Hi Lisa
Can you tell im having a bloody crap afternoon hahah - I am panicking somewhat - so fanks!!
Thanks Lof - yep have the confirmation letter and supporting letter which asks them to give us the WP etc - so im hopeful all that will be ok.
I think im having a "dip" on the ever up and down journey hahah -thanks to you both - im sitting here thinking HOW THE HELL CAN I GET THERE!!!
hahah - we have a second viewing this week (was supposed to be this weekend not impressed) and then if they are a goer we will be made up if they aren't -then we are probably going to cut our loses and rent it out! (Although we have to secure someone to do that too!) - We wanted the security of our house money behind us to set us up - but if needs must we will do with a small wedge put on the mortgage to get us established and rent long-term.
Thanks - im chilled a bit now - think I may need another glass of Vino and I'll stop looking at stuff because its confusing the issue hahahha -
Cheers!

We came to Van Island via PNP just over a year ago with two kids aged 10 and 12. We don't pay for their shooling and it was so easy to get places for them. In fact we had places at the school we wanted them to go to before we even moved here.
