Default Do I need to renew my British Passport

I am a canadian permanent resident living in Montréal, my British passport expires in February 2010. As a canadian permanent resident do I always need a valid British passport or can I let it expire and renew the passport at a later date when I choose to travel abroad?

Thanks in advance

William

Your choice, but it makes it pretty hard to travel anywhere, i.e. US.

Thanks for the advice PMM, sure I will renew my passport soon for travel purposes and in case of emergency etc. I just wasn't sure that it was OK with Immigration Canada to be a permanent resident without a valid passport.

As long as you are not leaving Canada or seeking to re-enter, you don't need a passport. Many permanent residents cannot get a passport from their country of origin.

To travel you need a passport, and with the well-documented hassle of getting a British passport overseas, apply before you need one, not at last minute.
