Disappointed

For as long as I can remember, I've wanted to visit Niagara Falls. We did it and I came away feeling quite sad. Obviously, the falls were stunning...so why do the town planners feel the need to build ugly concrete hotels and casinos and 'oomph it up' with extras more suited to Disneyland. The Falls are enough. Money has a lot to answer to....

I still love visiting Niagara Falls. I have nearly always done this from the Canadian side but I did the US side last time (a few weeks back). Got some great photos from the Observation Tower. The Maid of the Mist was cheaper than on the Canadian side. Also a bonus on the US side is the walk up the steps to the "Crow's Nest" near the American Falls - included in the Maid of the Mist fee. There's also a nice park on the US side.
In terms of the 2 towns, the Canadian side has more going for it in terms of restaurants and other attractions. You don't have to go too far to find some dodgy areas on the US side.
As others have mentioned, Niagara-on-the-Lake and the surrounding vineyards are usually worth a visit.
