hi all i have been looking into my family
i know my grandad was from canada
and we still have family there but i have just drawn a blank
all i have found out is this
seeley lake?
as seeley is my maidan name
and my grandads brother was a mayor of a town ?
if anyone knows of any seeleys please let me know
would like to know if this is true or just bull we was feed

Had never heard of it, but did a Google search, and came up with this. It's near Hazelton, British Columbia. That, in turn, is on the road from Prince George to Prince Rupert. Another town along that road is Terrace. Seeley Lake does look pretty, though.

there is a Seeley's Bay near Kingston, Ontario, named after someone called Seeley. They have a website www.seeleysbay.ca with a bit of history, and i think details of a book on the area?
we have a cottage there, its a great place.

maybe not! did you have a look at the seeleys bay website? its an unusual name and place name so maybe true!!!

The "Bay" was created around 1832 with the flooding of the Cranberry Marsh during the building of Rideau Canal. The Bay became a regular stop for the steam wheelers as they travelled up and down the canal. The village was named in 1841 after one of the landholders, Justus Seeley.

By 1851, a stagecoach travelled through the village three times per week, carrying passengers and mail north from Kingston to Perth to Smiths Falls. Easily accessible today by car or boat, travellers continue to visit Seeley's Bay, enjoying the town and area's charm and facilities. Vacationers can enjoy fishing (primarily bass and pike), boating and shopping in Seeley's Bay or nearby Kingston and Gananoque.

An excellent book about the area was released in September1996 entitled-

we are really not sure now
i know my grandad was called joseph seeley born in 1902 we think
he had a brother that was mayor of ottawa ?

helen says she had a old picture of grandads family and she thinks that some of them lived on a resavation ?
some were still in the old ways
why some had moved on with the times ?
helen did say in this picture of his family it has a man with long plates in his hair ? indain maybe ?
oh and that grandad could speak french too

well doesnt sound that unlikely, not far from Ottawa, so the french part sounds ok. not sure about the native connection - seeleys bay these days is very white, maybe the plats were as he was an old hippy!

The village was named after the Seeley family who set up a trading post about 1825. The native Indians were the only people to frequent his teepee store at this early point in Canal history. All early industries in the village were born out of necessity. Logs were needed for homes and wood needed for heat and furniture. Thousands of cords of wood were shipped out on the Rideau Canal after Seeley�s Bay was established as a port in 1832. The first industry in the community was an ashery. Potash was used for bleaching and making soap. By 1851, a stagecoach traveled through the village three times per week carrying passengers and mail north from Kingston to Perth to Smiths Falls. By 1885, the village was a shipping point for grain, lumber, livestock and wood. By this time, it was also a landing for steamboats traveling the Rideau system.

so if they were only dealing with natives they could have been natives themselves and or married - sounds promising

well i will keep trying but it is very hard as my mum and dad are irish
i know my grandad lied about his age couse he was to old for the army by 3 yrs so he had a birth cert doctored
thats is were he meet my grandmar over in ireland she was kathleen macdonnell and she stayed in ireland couse he loved the place
they came over to the uk in 1956 ans o the story goes that is why am british lol OMG what a mix up lol
