Default Deposit on the bill

Each time I buy something from the super store, there is a "deposit" at the end of the bill, often between 20 and 40 cents.. Does any one know what is this for?
Recycle blue bin... only for paper,? or can i keep the milk bottles, cereal cartons, egg cartons in it?
Thanks

Depends where you are living but different recyclable things have deposits on them to encourage people to return them. In Ontario for example Glass Milk Bottles havea deposit on them. So when you buy them you will be charged the deposit on top of the regular retail but if you return the bottle you get the deposit back. Kind of the same as with Beer Bottles at the Beer Store. Other provinces have different rules, B.C. has loads of different deposit programmes on all sort of items.

Usually a Blue bin is for recylcing paper and then there is a separate one, often grey, for glass and plastic. Here in Toronto though they just changed it because of upgrades to recycling faciilities and they are eliminating the grey box and just having one blue box for all recyclable items, so you can mix paper and plastic and glass etc. Best way to check is to look at the website of your local municipality and see what the rules are.

Hi,

Here in BC plastic bottles (Pepsi, water and the like have a deposit on them as do beer bottles and cans.

I don't know how many people actually bother taking them back for recycling. I do when I remember - last time I got given $20 back which paid for some more beer!!

The deposit on plastic bottles is why you see Hobos going through the bins in the parks. On a busy day in summer they can find lots of bottles to make money from

Here in Glasgow the deposit we used to pay on glass bottles is referred to as a

GLASS CHEQUE !!!!!!!

You used to always get the younsters asking for any ginger bottles as they used to get about 25 pence back on each glass cheque !!!
