Hi All
I have 2 questions for you-
I am waiting for a visa, I am a dependant, my partner is the principal applicant, we have applied for 'Permanent Residence'
1.Does 'permanent residence' mean that once we've landed we immediately become Canadian Citizens?
2.If for example my partner & I were to fall out, would I be able as a 'dependant' to remain legally in Canada(I will be working)?
I am just being cautious before I 'commit' myself, its in my nature!
Many Thanks

Hi Pammy,
You don't automatically become a Canadian Citizen when you become a Permanent Resident. You generally have to be physically in Canada for 2 out of 5 years (under the new law) before you can apply. Even then it is not an automatic right or something that just happens; you have to fulfil the residency requirement plus take an exam and swear an oath.
With regards to what would happen to you if you 'fell out' with your partner: I am assuming it would be the same as a sponsored spouse that divorced ie. no, you wouldn't have to leave as you would have PR in your own right.
I'm am sure that someone else can confirm or deny this (seeing as I am neither of the people that you addressed your enquiry to!)

No, you have to meet the eligibility criteria for citizenship.

Yes, once you land, even if you and your partner part ways, you are still a permanent
resident of Canada.

1. No. What you will receive if and when approved is only the immigration visa. Once
you formally land in Canada with such you will become Permanent Residents. Only
after you accumulate at least 3 years (out of 4) of presence in Canada you will be
eligible to apply for citizenship.
2. Yes.
