I've looked on wiki and googled but I'm still unsure
If we land in BC in summer when one daughter is 6 (birthday at end of May) and the other daughter is 15 (birthday at end of April) what school grades would they be in when school year starts in September.
What about my son who will be 18 (birthday in middle of April)? Hoping he will work and travel for a year before deciding if wants to go to uni in Europe or Canada. He will have A levels by the time we arrive.

I'm not certain, but the wiki might be off. I did some reading around to try to find an answer to this, and for kindergarten, it said that the child starts kindergarden in the year that they turn 5... so for anyone starting kindergarten this coming September, the child is born in 2009. That means the child might actually be still 4 in September if they have a late birthday.

So if you extrapolate that up, they start grade 1 the year they turn 6, 2 the year they turn 7, and so on... so they start Grade 10 the year they turn 15. (Age is 5 years above the grade.)

So a Grade 10 class would have mostly 15 year olds, and a handful of 14 year olds who have not yet turned 15 but will turn 15 before 31 December of that year.

Some provinces have 1 year KG, some 2. In Ontario my oldest started Junior Kindergarten while still only 3, turning 4 a month or two later.

For the OP a child will start G1 in the fall of the calender year they turn 6. A child will usually start G10 in the fall of the calender year they turn 15.

Schools though can be flexible if there are social or educational / developmental reasons to go into a grade above or below the norm.

Is that a BC thing, or did you mean they start grade one "in the year that they turn 6". Many are still 5.

The wiki says kids are in Grade 1 when they are aged 6 to 7... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand post and solve.

Okay, so I think what they wiki says is in Grade 1 they are "6 turning 7", whereas I read it as "they start grade 1 in the year they are 6 turning 7" which wasn't correct.

Just misinterpreted what the wiki said!

6-7 means ages 6 to 7 rather than 6 turning 7.

The '-' is the same as writing 'to'.

I know what a dash means, I simply was clarifying the way I had interpreted it. I interpreted it as the start age, but the wiki page is written as the age Throughout the grade, as in students will be either 6 or turning 6 in the first part of Grade 1 (until 31 Dec) and then may turn 7 if they have an earlier birthday of the following year.

Current year minus year of birth, minus 5 = school grade as of September of this year.

There should be no 7 year olds in grade 1

Unless it's in the second half of the year...

Child 1, Jane, is born on 15 February 2008. On 12 August 2014, today, she is 6. She starts Grade 1 in September 2014. She will be turning 7 in February, when she is still in Grade 1.

Child 2, John, is born on 15 November 2008. On 12 August 2014, today, he is 5. He also starts Grade 1 in September 2014. He turns 6 in November. He will not be 7 at all while he is in Grade 1.

The way the wiki is written, it does not capture children who have not yet turned whatever age the "lower" age is for that grade. In the above case, John is not yet 6 when he starts Grade 1. But he still does start Grade 1.

That's what I was trying to get it, and why the wiki being written as "6-7" confused me.

Right you are, my mistake... One of my own kids was 7 in grade one!:o

Dont know why I didnt think to give both my kids the same name too. Saves a fortune in monogramming the towels and none of that parental embarassment when you realise you just shouted at one with the others name:D

Gotcha :) In the UK it used to be known as "rising 5's" for starting school, which perhaps the wiki should say too (but in that case, "rising 6's")

Wiki often confuses me too, lol.
