Default Damn UK car insurance!!!

Bloomin typical - you try and be honest, tell them you are leaving the damn country and that could you please have a proof of no claims bonus for the new country and they frikkin stiff you!!!

I am ONE month off three years no claims and because I have to cancel it I lose the entirety of that year so I can only show proof for 2 years which is bad enough but because I told them I had to cancel it they are going to charge me £45 for the bloody priviledge!!!! One month short and they are charging me!!!!!! Unbelievable!!!

I tell you I am so angry I could spit fire! I don't know how I stayed so polite on the phone. Oh these blasted people!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!

With my insurer in Ontario they would only allow me a max of 2 years no claims history anyway. It seems to be a luck of the draw how much no claims you're allowed when you come here as other posters eem to have been given more allowance for past driving history than I was.
Yes, agree with you tho' that insurance is the work of the devil and that insurance companies actually run the world now!

Honesty is not always the best policy

The ads are context sensitive - the car and truck threads are all full of dealership ads =) Currently says "Find "Damn UK car insurance!!!" on the web" at the bottom of my page .lol.

We've very kindly been furnished with details of an insurer who MAY accept the proof from UK.... fingers crossed!

The standard "no claims bonus" letter is worthless anyway. What you need is a letter confirming the dates of your insurance (1 January 2004 to 2 January 2006 for example) who was insured on the policy and whether there were any claims during that period. We have just gone through this trying to document 10 years worth (we used a broker who arranged via different insurers so it has been a bit of a nightmare) but it is possible. They always say " you want the standard no claims bonus letter" but you need to point out to them that you don't.

If you obtain the above, the Canadian insurer will at least be able to see how long you held the policies for and will be able to decide for themselves what to "credit" you with

Yep - I even faxed them a copy of the letter they should use and they are fine to do that bit but..... I only have the nearly 3 years anyway so the letter will show that and hubby's (who were much more helpful) will indicate his 5 years... although I don't really understand because this latest insurer will state he had no claimes during this time even thought he wasn't with them for the full five years I don't think, but apprently they are used to sending out this type of non standard letter but we shall see when it turns up... to be honest my head is so full of it I can't bear to think about it anymore!! LOL

Could you not leave the policy running for another month? Say you have changed your mind or you are going to Canada for a few weeks and then end up staying for good?

From my experience of the insurance business this doesn't seem unreasonable. If you do want to consider this as an option I will run it pass the missus, she's a Business Analyst in the insurance industry so will know whether this is dodgy or quite legitimate.

Good luck,

Ian.

I assume Alberta not much different from Ontario as I had proof of no claim (letter stating that I had insured 11 years claim free in the UK).
We paid $3500 for a Ford Escort in 1997. The second year our premium dropped to $1800. After 8 years no claims in Canada we were paying $1000/yr for a Ford.
Its strange as we also had an A4 Audi Quattro which cost $1200/yr to insure. Then I think we got 10% reduction due to Ontario govt intervening on car insurance.
We were given full no claim when we returned to the UK last year, so it seems strange its does not work the other way around?

we gave up trying to prove it in the end. It just kept getting to dead ends, plus one of my insurance companies had incorrect info!

The funny thing was ICBC agreed i had two years (I really have 7) and 18months on, they have never asked me for the proof of this bit....

Alternatively just knock yourself a dodgy No claims bonus letter with a made up insurance company, address and phone number back in blighty......they are hardly likely to call and check up. I can do you a cracking copy for oooh..lets say 35$ US.
