hi gang. this my first post here so be gentle with me.
can anyone tell me if the recision has hit canada as hard as its hitting here in the uk.i came off the road in july last year after 16 years, and went into the workshops as a fitter. i now looks like im going to get laid off again, with my new job. (thats twice since december) as you are all aware there are no driving jobs in the uk, so i am planning to go to canada for 3 months or so and then come back home to the wife and kid for 10 days and then go back to canada.
am i living in a dream world, or do you think this is really possible. my wife and kid have to stay here due to work and study commitments, but stopping here in the uk and going on the dole is not an option. your comments are welcome.

Around here the big employers are related to the car industry. They're on three day weeks.

Got a friend who is a transport manager with SLH - a big shipping company exclusive to Sears. He says shipping is down 40% year over year.

Eastern Canada is getting hit worse at the moment due to manufacturing, especially the auto industry.
In BC the greatest loss of jobs is expected to be related to the construction industry. I read last week in the Van Sun that for 2009 40,000 jobs would be lost of which 25,000 were directly/indirectly from construction.
Canada as a whole seems to be faring better than over countries, but i guess its all a matter of perspective.

Is this the case with most sectors, i.e. job cuts etc? I'm a Management Consultant by trade and will be heading to Toronto in March and hope to be able to secure a job in either this field or the Financial sector. Any thoughts on how these markets are fairing in the current climate?

You are probably aware that North America is awash with Management Consultants. In a time of a downward spiraling economy, cancellation or deferring consulting contracts is high on the agenda of many companies.
