Any advice on the current exchange rate from GBP to CAD$, i took a chance and bought some dollars today at $2.41 to the £, just wondered if i`m doing the right thing ( too late now anyway,lol)
Also wondered as i don`t have a Canadian account yet, could i send it to a relative in Canada to keep for me?.

go to www.xe.com and have a look at their offers.
they charge about 30sterling per transaction and you get very near the rate shown.
$2.41 is good but even in the last 3 years its been as low as $2.00 and as high as $2.52

it was only 2 months ago it was around the $2.20 mark so your timing looks good.

:lecture: If you are transferring over more than £20000, make sure you do it at commercial rates. I used NatWest. The manager at Weston Favell in Northampton was fantastic, he set it all up, we agreed on a day and I simply wento into the office with him. He called up the rates and I told him when the rate was acceptable. We were watching the actual money market rate. I had already set up an account with Scotiabank who have also been great and simply printed off an online statement as proof of funds.

As was said already, you can make a lot of dollars by transferring your money over at the right rate.

I set up an account with Moneycorp, they check out well and were easy to deal with. I bought £8,000 of CAD yesterday on a spot contract and they charged £15 for the deal, with free transfer to the account of my choice ( which i dont have yet) they will hold the money for me `till i instruct them where to send it. I`m waiting to do a forward contract later, but when i saw the rate yesterday i thought it was worth buying some there and then. Knowing my luck it will jump further now, :-(

Anyone with info on HSBC in Canada?, it seems i can open an account in Canada from my local Glasgow branch. Maybe someone has had dealings with them good or bad?

We bought our Canadian Dollars today from www.hifx.co.uk at a foreward rate of 2.42 which basically means that we enter a contract today with them to purchase at the above rate. We pay 10% down and the rest has to be paid for by an agreed date (15th April for us as we have tied this in with buying a Canadian property).

There are no charges or commission and even your first transfer is free.
