Default Criminal Records And Permanant Visa.

You know when you were a teen and you did stupid things! I have a conviction on file that dates back to when i was 17. I am now 36 it was a petty theft offence and i was fined £50 at a magistrates court does this mean that i will automatically be refused a permanant visa for Canada. IF not what process should i follow with regards to this.
