Credit Question
#1
O.K you can call me stupid if you like but I was thinking while putting my makeup on this morning.
Do you have to start again from scratch with regards to your credit rating if you move to a different province.
The only reason I ask is if you move vehicles from one province to another you have to get an inspection done on it and also don't you have to take a driving test?
Just curious and had a glass of wine now so I feel brave enough to ask a silly question

No, I don't think so.
Your bank, credit cards etc will report to equifax a national credit company.

Credit rating is national so no.
Not sure on the inspections of vehicles when moving to different provinces.
Drivers license if you have a full license not a probationary or whatever the new licenses are called you just exchange no drivers test.

I was an Air Traffic Controller for thirty years.

I just saw you most likely need an out of province inspection form when bringing a car into Alberta so probably the same in other provinces.

I was in Vancouver for five years, then back in the UK for five but kept a Canadian credit card and bank account which I used periodically. Moved from UK back to Toronto last year and it was very clear my credit record followed me (in good ways) even with having a UK address on everything for five years. MBNA actually kept increasing my Mastercard credit limit while I was non-resident with no Canadian income. At one point it was something stupid like $50,000.

You are usually given a period of time (30-90 days, etc) to change your license, registration and health card to the new province. So, are you moving?

Maybe some time in the future, I do like Kamloops, Neil likes Kelowna, there is wine there so I could be swayed.

Believe me, my salary either in Canada or the UK never justified that. I guess it was merely a function of using the card sensibly over a period of time. I dont think my balance was ever more than a few thousand dollars. I would be terrified if I owed 50K!

mbna have a rep for offering people ridiculous amounts of credit that they don't really want.

I heard this. Their minimum payments (I think now amended by law?) were also incredibly low. They also constantly called to offer balance transfers and sent out cheques etc. Their website was pretty good and it was a no-fee card that worked well with my hotel loyalty programme but I never really liked the way they operated.
