I actively use the Barclaycard without having a UK bank account. They'll take any sort of payment. I send money orders purchased from a currency broker.

Again its down to personal experience!

Mrs C and I came out with credit checks for each of us, from two different companies, we've used as proof of credit worthiness to getting Rentals, bank accounts, Credit cards, Car leases, store cards shall I carry on??

I suppose we were in a fortunate position as there are only 2 banks in town and Scotia knew we'd go to CIBC if they didn't give us credit cards!!
Bank of Scotland in the UK don't give out these letters BEFORE you move across, instead your chosen bank in Canada has to contact them direct and then the UK bank will give a reference.

Anyone else been told this or have I been told a lot of piffle?

I've banked with BoS for years

I'm too senile to cope that. I need the automatic minimum payment facility (UK banks only as far as I know) to cope with those times that I forget about it.

Ah yes. Before I discovered the currency broker I used to buy money orders at the bank. It cost $15 plus an outrageous rate to buy the order so when the minimum charge on my Access was only five pounds I didn't bother sending anything. They cut me off.
