Lots of school boards have tried to teach creationism. The whole idea of Creation Science is to make an end run around the prohibition on teaching religion in schools, but I don't think any have yet managed it.

I was referring to that type of school but thought Alberta had phased them out. I guess there's just Ontario and Alberta left then. OK, you're the more nuttily religious province.

Indeed Iain, not to mention....

However reluctant I may be to pass up a good "laugh at the redneck Albertan thickos" opportunity, it has to be admitted that there are idiots in Ontario as well.

Then things must change, otherwise I shall picket my local government representative. If that doesn't work I will create the 'Anti Creationist Movement of Ontario (Immigrant Branch).
I suspect it won't be operating for very long though.

There are some very powerful arguments to support creationism. Harper, for example, is a most unlikely product of evolution. As is Luba Goy.

You will have to picket a higher authority than that. The seperate school boards are pritected and enshrined in the very legislation that brough Canada as we know it into existence, the British North American Act of 1867

Cochrane's Mitford Middle School will launch a Christian program this fall. Christian beliefs, including instruction on creationism in science class, will be taught to 50 or so elementary aged students as part of a two-year pilot project.

Not exactly notiaink.... the Constitution Act of 1867 did indeed provide protection for separate schools in Quebec and Ontario, but Quebec abolished the system in 1996 and there's no reason why Ontario couldn't do the same.

What's more the 1867 Act only refers to schooling up to grade 9: Ontario (under tory William Davis) extended the funding up to grade 13 as recently as 1984.

No its not actually a private school- it is a state school that recieves a bequest from the private sector. So it is local state pupils that attend the school- it is their local state school. The vast majority of the money comes form the state- you can sponser a school and steer its way very cheaply (for about a million quid) and certainly the NE school is brand new

Then that is very worrisome. Perhaps we'll all have to go to America to avoid the fundies.
