Default Couple of general questions

Hope this is ok but Ive posted similar in Australia thread so here goes

A few things i am wondering if its the same

Is there any quarratine for pets ? and ideas on cost to get them over?

Do you start a fresh with things like credit rating, does this play a part in your application? (i ask because its not an issue for Australia at all which surprised me)

When it comes to housing how easy is it to rent if you have pets?

And lastly what is the main improvement from the UK for you personally ?

thanks in advance.

No.

Yes. No, but you need proof of funds in most immigration classes

Easy (ish). If you dont tell them they have no legal right to evict you based on pet ownership, at least in Ontario.

Cost of Housing, Lack of petty crime, no stress, nice friendly people, 4 season weather. Thats the tip of the iceberg.

No quarantine for dogs, but have to be vaccinated against rabies which involves vaccine, blood test couple of weeks later to check has worked, and if not, another vaccine and another blood test. For some dogs for whatever reason, first vaccine doesn't always work. So bear in mind you will need a few weeks to get this done, can't be done last minute. There may also be a time limit it has to be done in before going, but can't remember off the top of my head. Cost to get them over varies, we paid about 2000 pounds for a company to sort everything out for us, kennels, flights, paperwork, etc to reduce stress at a very stressful time, and they were great and we had no problems. From looking on this forum, you can do it a lot cheaper if you do all the preparation yourself and book them as excess baggage/cargo, but other people who have taken that route would be able to tell you more about it.

Credit rating - you have none when you come so have to start again. Can get credit cards where you put in say $1000 first and then use it to start getting a credit rating. After about 6 months of using it, they might trust you and let you use their money! Don't know much else about that i am afraid.

As for renting with pets, we have 2 lab-size dogs and it did limit our choice of houses - some people just wouldn't look at us. However, we did eventually have a choice of 3 or 4 places, so it wasn't a problem. (we're in newfoundland by the way)

Main improvement - less people, more space, easier access to outdoor activities. That pretty much did it for us - in the area we came from in scotland hundreds of new houses gone up in the last few years, the infrastructure is just not there to support it.

Hope this helps.

You can bring a dog from the UK last minute with no paperwork or vaccinations (airline will need fitness to fly cert, but customs don't need anything at all) - see option 3 in the Wiki. Good to know for those who have to make last minute moves

hmm. maybe just nl that requires rabies vaccine we were advised that the dogs had to be done to come over? ah well, they are done now - would have to be done over here anyway so no biggie! Had their first vet to canadian vet yesterday - unfortunately that hasn't improved, one of them just sits shaking in fear, the other one just jumps up at the reception desk and barks at everyone! Got a shock yesterday - there was a dog behind reception desk, who promptly jumped up and barked back!! should have seen her face - major confusion.

It might be a municipality requirement, but they definitely don't need it to enter Canada. We brought an unvaccinated dog and then had him done (eventually!) as per City of Winnipeg requirements. I just always point it out in case of last minute panic for those who move in a hurry. Same with pet passport, that can be done in Canada too if you think you might ever take the animal back to the UK - so no panic if you miss the 6mth countdown for that either.

Good luck with their vet fear Mine is so stupid he'll go anywhere he thinks there's a chance of a biscuit or a belly rub!

Yup, that about sums up the one that barks (kim) for food or tummy rub will do anything - has absolutely no shame!

That was my impression too. There's also likely to be a fee.

Out of principle I didn't want to pay a fee or deposit my own cash. I continued to use my UK credit cards - widely accepted except ONLINE with Futureshop (but okay in the store) - and when I got PR (having been in Canada for quite some time by then) I applied for TD Bank's Green Visa card.

The application was initially turned down but I persisted and provided printouts of my UK card statements that showed the level of activity (spending levels in Canada as well as repayments) and they issued a card. Not a high limit, but it's a start and covers present needs.

For Credit info:
See this thread post #9

Also this thread post #11

There are more threads on these subjects you could search for, but these are my experiences so I know what is possible.

Good luck with your decision.

Rob.
