Default Costs of emigrating

Looking to start a thread where others can share their experiences of the costs of moving to Canada from the UK.

From start to finish, (finish being you sitting in your new abode and looking at the 'bill' of it all...)

So:-

- Selling up UK home £.......
solicitors, Estate agency fees, council tax final bills, redirecting mail...

- Shipping items £.......

- Flights £......

- Setting up costs $.......
Initial temporary accommodation / hotel, Rental property upfront deposit, temporary storage, Upfront utility fees, upfront TV / phone fees, mobile phones, private health/dental insurance, new household furniture

- Car(s)$.......
Upfront finance deposits, one off / cash sale, salesperson fees, safety certificate/MOT, upfront insurance payment

- School $.....
kids supplies, transport

- Childcare $......
before and after school care for kids aged 4 + 6

Obviously figures will vary due to where in Canada, size of family, company transfer covering costs etc

Any unforeseen costs can be added to the list I'm sure lol

Two airfares, Air India from Heathrow to NY, American from NY to Toronto. Two months rent. Don't remember the cost of either.

Drove the car to the airport in London, pulled the plates and left it so one should count the cost of the car (fifteen quid, iirc) and of the parking if they ever come after me. Taxi in Toronto.

Maybe £500 total, without the parking.

Assuming you can get work reasonably quickly I would allow at least 25k GBP for a family of 4. Yes you'll probably want to buy a BBQ and will need a lawnmower etc, but these are things you'll probably have bought in the UK too, so do they count as additional cost from immigrating? We moved quite a few years ago, but we're still paying the price!

Any threads laid out in the format I have done?

I feel there's no harm, and it's helpful for myself and others to have a general 'list' of costs from which we can all refer to, and add/subtract things as we wish.

Your thread helped me for example as it made me add 'car rental' to my list... (overlooked the possible necessity to have a car as soon as we get there prior to purchasing one of our own)

Surprised something like this isn't available in the Wiki...

Yeah that's right I wouldn't class a BBQ as part or cost of immigration. I'm looking at getting a rough budget for absolute essentials

I will however make another budget for such lifestyle items once I do this one.

There are too many variables and differences in circumstances.
Just selling your house in the UK will have different levels of fees.
Flights from the UK to Canada also vary depending on carrier, airports used and time of year. London to Vancouver or London to Toronto? Air Canada, Westjet or Air Transat to mention a few. March is cheaper than August.
Renting a 1,2 or 3 bedroom varies in cities. Low vacancy rate higher prices.
Shipping items are we talking 40' or 20' container full or self packed move or just a couple of tea chests?
Internet/TV and phone rates vary depending on bundles or plans on offer.

There would be a need for it to be updated regularly as prices go up/down and additionally, costs would increase/decrease depending on where in Canada you were moving to, which companies were used etc. One size definitely won't fit all!

You are very welcome to produce one, if you would like to.

There's quite a few Wiki articles for guidance...

It's an impossible question to answer. You can make a list of things you'll need to buy/pay for, but this is the most "moveable feast" you're ever likely to come across in your life.
Flights: from where to where? Manchester, Glasgow, London, Toronto, Economy WestJet, first class Air Canada...
Halifax, Calgary. Vancouver etc etc etc
Hotels: Four Seasons, Holiday Inn, Rusty's Motel and Liquor Store???
Car Rental: Nisan Micra, Grand caravan, Corvette Stingray
House Rental: Trailer Park at The Shangrila, 6 bed, 4500 sq ft Stanley Park?
You can look up prices the same as anyone else and then tailor what you can afford to fit the money available. All I can say, however, is whatever you budget, allow a whole lot more!

Basically tell him how much it's going to cost him.

Quite why someone who is landed or at least has PR (weren't you doing a recce in Oct/Nov) and is apparently moving here next year (wedding allowing) hasn't done this earlier I don't know...

This forum, honestly.

I'm pretty sure that I started this thread by asking for other people to share THEIR experiences of their costs.. Pretty sure... Wait I'll check, yeah I did..

I also wrote in the first post that I understand everybody's experiences/figures will be different. I get it, I do.

Before anymore jump on the bandwagon. And another thread gets swallowed up with irrelevant nonsense, can we leave out the sarcasm? And pointless negative nit picking? Can we leave out the hopeless attempts at being a smartar#e? And maybe stick to the point of this forum, and bloody assist each other in our varying stages of immigration?

If I don't like, agree or can assist with a thread, I just don't reply. But then i have other things to do in my life rather than sit poised vulture style at my computer. Ye ken?

Much love
