Welcome to British Expats
Without wishing to seem rude, please use the search function, both these subjects have come up numerous times in the past, and there are many usefull threads, some even include grocery receipts, current prices etc etc.
The wiki may also have usefull information regarding taxes etc too.
Then if you have some specific questions Im sure someone will be more than happy to have a go at helping.

Re: cost of living
Hi and welcome!
It's generally said that the cost of living in Canada is about the same as the Uk - while some things such as petrol are cheaper, others such as groceries are more expensive so it all evens out to about the same. Your best bet to get some exact figures is to do a search of the forums (top right) which will bring up lots of threads where people have given exact figures.
As for taxes, if you look in the Wiki (on blue bar top of page), that has articles on tax in it I believe, including links to websites that will calculate it exactly for you. The Wiki also has lots of other useful information (including a 'to do before you leave' list which may come in handy for you!) so could be worth a good look at.
Good luck with the move.

With respect to your tax question, see Payroll Deductions-Canada .
There are many other articles in the Taxes-Canada section of the Wiki.
